Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Yeon Jin, Medical Director of UH CELL Clinic Gangnam (formerly Dr. Petit Clinic Gangnam).
Today, I’d like to introduce the radiofrequency (RF) lifting treatments and bipolar RF devices that many patients ask about in Gangnam. Did you know that there are different types of RF lifting treatments?
Devices that many people are familiar with—such as Thermage, Volnewmer, and Oligio—use monopolar RF technology. In contrast, Potenza DDR and InMode FORMA, which I’ll be discussing today, belong to the bipolar RF category.
Recently, more and more people in Seoul have become interested in understanding the differences between these devices.

So, what are the characteristics of bipolar radiofrequency (RF)?
Bipolar RF delivers energy broadly to the more superficial layers of the skin, which is why many people notice visible improvements soon after the treatment. It can help the skin appear brighter and more radiant while also improving enlarged pores and overall skin texture.
It is generally associated with very little discomfort, so many patients undergo the treatment without applying numbing cream.
Another advantage is that it can safely improve skin elasticity in delicate, thin-skinned areas such as around the eyes and the forehead, where treatments are often more challenging.
These characteristics also make bipolar RF an important consideration in Korean aesthetic treatments.
Let’s also briefly look at the differences between monopolar and bipolar RF.
Monopolar RF delivers concentrated energy to the deeper layers of the skin. As a result, the treatment may involve a certain level of discomfort, but it can also provide lifting effects that improve overall facial contours.
Depending on the individual’s skin condition, it is generally recommended two to three times a year.
In contrast, bipolar RF works by allowing electrical current to flow between the positive and negative electrodes within a single handpiece, delivering heat to the more superficial layers of the skin.
Because it causes less discomfort, bipolar RF focuses on immediate skin tightening and improving overall skin quality.
It is commonly performed as a series of treatments at one- to two-week intervals, making it a suitable option for regular skin maintenance or before an important event. This treatment approach is widely used in Korean skin aesthetic clinics.
Many people are also curious about the Potenza device.

Potenza is a versatile device that supports a variety of treatment tips, allowing procedures to be customized according to each patient’s skin concerns. It is available in both invasive and non-invasive modes, and the DDR tip is a non-invasive bipolar RF applicator.
The DDR tip delivers energy with a gliding motion across the skin, targeting the dermis at a depth of approximately 2.5 mm to help improve fine lines, tighten enlarged pores, and enhance overall skin radiance.
Potenza also offers other non-invasive tips, such as DIA and SFA. The well-known Pumping Tip, on the other hand, is an invasive tip that is often combined with skin boosters to effectively improve enlarged pores.
This customized treatment approach is important for addressing the diverse skin types commonly seen in Seoul.
Many people also ask about the difference between InMode FX and FORMA.
Many people also ask about the difference between InMode FX and FORMA. FX uses radiofrequency energy combined with high-voltage electrical stimulation to reduce fat cells and improve facial contours.
It is suitable for areas with excess fat, such as the double chin or deep cheek fat, but the treatment may involve some discomfort and a short recovery period. This approach is commonly used in Korean aesthetic clinics for facial contouring.
In contrast, FORMA uses bipolar radiofrequency (RF) technology. Similar to Potenza DDR, it involves little to no discomfort and requires virtually no downtime.
Because it primarily targets the superficial layers of the skin, it is well suited for delicate areas such as the forehead and around the eyes, while providing immediate improvements in skin firmness and radiance.

Who Is This Treatment Recommended For?
This treatment is especially suitable for those who have an important appointment or event coming up.
Because it helps improve your overall skin condition after the procedure, you can expect your skin to look brighter and more refreshed—as if you’ve had plenty of rest.

It is also a great option for those who are sensitive to pain or are concerned about enlarged pores and fine lines.
When performed regularly for three or more sessions at appropriate intervals, it helps maintain collagen and elastin production, contributing to improved skin firmness and elasticity.
This treatment approach is also widely preferred in Korea.

How Should You Choose the Right Clinic?
This is something I’ve always emphasized since my time at Dr. Petit Clinic Gangnam.
Rather than choosing a clinic that offers only a single device, I recommend selecting one that provides a variety of treatment options that can be combined into a customized program.
Depending on each patient’s skin condition, bipolar RF treatments can achieve even better results when combined with Potenza DIA Tip, Aqua Peel, LDM, or HIFU.
This combination approach is considered an important part of Korean aesthetic treatments. Although the procedure may appear straightforward, it actually requires precise technique to maintain a consistent temperature and deliver energy evenly across the skin.
To maximize the treatment results while minimizing the risk of side effects such as burns, the practitioner’s experience and expertise are essential. This is especially important in areas like Gangnam, where there are many clinics to choose from.
At UH CELL Clinic Gangnam, we review our treatment protocols through weekly in-house seminars and continuously research various treatment programs to achieve better outcomes. We continue to provide consultations based on experience with a wide variety of clinical cases in Gangnam and strive to deliver highly satisfying results as a leading skin clinic in Seoul.
