Tell Us Before Filler Treatment If You Have Inflamed Acne Near the Mouth

Hello, I am Dr. Kim Yeon-jin, Medical Director of UHCELL Clinic Gangnam.

A painful red spot can appear near the mouth on the day of a lip filler appointment. It may look small enough to conceal, but covering it does not make the underlying skin ready for an injection.

When inflammation or a wound is close to the planned needle path, the skin should be assessed first. Delaying an elective procedure when needed is part of a careful treatment plan.

Why does one small spot need to be checked?

Dermal filler is placed into tissue through the skin. Inflamed acne, blisters, drainage, or an open wound can mean that the skin barrier is not in its usual condition.

The areas around the lips and nose are touched frequently and can retain oil or cosmetics. Appearance alone may not distinguish an inflamed papule, a pustule, or simple irritation.

Filler safety information also advises deferring injections at sites with active inflammation or infection until the condition has resolved and is controlled. Rather than naming the spot yourself, show it as it is.

Why distinguish acne from a cold sore?

Not every change around the mouth is acne. Tingling followed by a cluster of small blisters may require assessment for a cold sore. A tender red bump may instead be inflammatory acne.

These conditions have different causes and management. Squeezing or puncturing a lesion can enlarge the wound and obscure its original appearance.

Tell the clinician whether blisters have recurred in the same place, when the change began, and which ointments or patches you used. A lesion that needs diagnosis is assessed separately from the filler plan.

What should you prepare before the appointment?

You do not need to cancel immediately. Take a clear photo in good light, note when the change began, and contact the clinic before your visit.

  • When redness, pain, blistering, or drainage started
  • Whether it has recurred in the same area
  • Ointments, oral medicines, or patches used
  • Fever or other general symptoms

Do not squeeze or pierce the lesion. Avoid harsh scrubs or peels that remove the surface. Do not stop prescribed medicine on your own to keep a cosmetic appointment.

A delay does not mean abandoning the plan

Reassessing the skin after it settles is part of the procedure plan. Readiness is not decided by a fixed number of days. Redness, tenderness, drainage, crusting, and skin damage all matter.

The product, injection area, and previous procedures should also be reviewed. Two similar-looking spots may lead to different decisions depending on their condition and the intended injection path.

At UHCELL Clinic Gangnam, we assess the planned site and surrounding skin before discussing whether to proceed or postpone. Please show the current condition instead of concealing it.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Is filler possible if the spot is a short distance from the injection site?

Distance alone is not enough. A clinician should assess the extent of inflammation, skin condition, and planned injection path.

Can I arrive with an acne patch on?

Yes, but tell us when you applied it and which product you used. It may need to be removed for examination.

Can I have filler as soon as the lesion looks better?

There is no universal waiting period. Residual redness, pain, wounds, and previous treatment should be reviewed before scheduling.

If a new lesion appears around the lips or nose, tell us before your appointment. UHCELL Clinic Gangnam will assess the skin and planned injection site before discussing whether to proceed or postpone.
