Aftercare Costs in Korea: Four Stages Worth Checking
2026/10/05
- Skin Care
Whether aftercare at a Korean dermatology clinic is already included in a procedure fee depends on the clinic and the procedure, and the clearest way to check is to split aftercare into four stages: same-day calming care, confirmation during your stay, questions after you fly home, and maintenance retreatment. Korean medical law requires clinics to post non-covered treatment fees so patients can check them easily, so asking for a stage-by-stage breakdown is a reasonable request, not an imposition. At our Gangnam location, guests staying at the affiliated UHC hotel can choose one complimentary recovery service, either a 30-minute oxygen chamber session or a vitamin IV drip, and the vitamin IV is priced separately if both are used.
Hello, I’m Kim Yeonjin, director of UH CELL Clinic’s Gangnam branch. Patients often ask me whether aftercare comes with the procedure fee or gets billed on top of it. I cannot give a one-line answer, because calming care right after a procedure and a question you send after flying home are two different services inside the same word. I ask patients to stop treating “aftercare” as one bundle and instead check it stage by stage, in the order time actually moves.
Four Stages for Checking Aftercare Costs
The table below is built for someone visiting from abroad for a short stay. Each row lists what typically happens, a question worth asking in consultation, and what to get in writing.
| Stage | What Happens | Question to Ask | What to Get in Writing |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1. Same day | Calming, cooling, rest in a recovery space | Is calming care already in the quoted price? | The line-item breakdown on the quote |
| 2. During your stay | Rechecking swelling or bruising, additional treatment if needed | Is a pre-departure recheck visit billed separately? | Available recheck dates and their cost |
| 3. After you fly home | Photo questions, symptom check-ins | What channel handles questions after I leave, and in what language? | The contact channel and response language |
| 4. Maintenance | Retreatment, ongoing upkeep | When would you expect the next session? | The procedure name, treated area, and product used |
Stages 2 and 4 are the ones most likely to be scheduled as a new visit, so pricing them in advance protects your travel schedule. Stage 3 is less about cost and more about confirming the contact channel and the language you will be answered in.
Fee Disclosure Is a Legal Requirement, Not a Favor
Korean medical law gives patients a specific protection here. Article 45 of the Medical Service Act requires medical institutions to disclose non-covered treatment fees, meaning procedures not covered by national health insurance, so that patients and guardians can check them easily, according to the Korea Ministry of Government Legislation. The same article’s third clause bars a clinic from charging more than the amount it disclosed, a point reaffirmed in case law compiled by CaseNote. A separate rule, Enforcement Rule Article 42-2 of the Medical Service Act, requires clinics to explain the items and prices of government-notified non-covered procedures directly to the patient before treatment, and the Constitutional Court addressed this notification system in its 2023 decision on case 2021Hun-Ma93.
Most cosmetic procedures fall into this non-covered category. Asking “is aftercare included?” is not an awkward question. It is confirming one line on a quote that the law already requires the clinic to disclose. I tell patients not to rely only on a verbal explanation and to ask the clinic to point to the exact line where calming care or a recheck visit sits on the written quote. We cover how to read that quote in more detail in a separate piece on our news page about what to check on a Gangnam clinic estimate.
Where Included and Separate Fees Split at Our Gangnam Clinic
A concrete example is easier to follow than an abstract rule. Our Gangnam branch operates as an on-site facility inside UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam, a UHC group hotel. Because of that layout, post-procedure recovery and lodging continue inside the same building.
Two recovery items carry the following conditions:
- Eligibility: guests of the UHC hotel
- Free scope: a 30-minute oxygen chamber session or a vitamin IV drip, one or the other
- If both are used: the vitamin IV is priced at 55,000 KRW
Under the same label of “recovery care,” one item is included and the other becomes a separate cost depending on how it is used. This benefit applies to UHC hotel guests specifically, so anyone staying elsewhere should confirm availability and pricing in consultation. Current detailed terms are posted on our promotions page.
Timing Your Post-Treatment Photos to When Effects Actually Show
Checking in once, the day after a procedure, and calling it done leaves no record at the point when a judgment is actually needed. Different procedures settle at different speeds.
| Procedure | When Effects Show | Basis | Suggested Photo Check-in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Botulinum toxin | Visible within about 3 to 7 days; improvement typically lasts around 3 to 4 months | American Academy of Dermatology patient guidance | About 1 week after treatment |
| Ultherapy | Collagen production develops over 2 to 3 months; facial results can last up to a year or longer | Merz Aesthetics guidance and a 2025 announcement | 1 month and 3 months after treatment |
| Dermal filler | Injection-site reactions such as redness, swelling, or bruising usually settle within 1 to 2 weeks | ASDS Task Force recommendations | 2 weeks or later after treatment |
The timing in the right-hand column is a scheduling suggestion I offer based on the sources above, not a clinically validated benchmark. Individual healing varies, so the actual check-in point is best set in consultation to match your specific procedure.
Fillers carry one more point worth remembering. The U.S. FDA notes that most filler side effects appear shortly after treatment and resolve within days to weeks, but some can appear weeks, months, or even years later. That is a reason to keep your treatment record even after you have flown home.
Signs That Need Immediate Care, Not a Message
Some symptoms should not wait for a reply to a message. The FDA advises seeking immediate medical attention if any of the following appear during or shortly after a filler procedure:
- Unusual pain
- Changes in vision
- Skin near the injection site turning white, gray, or blue
- Signs resembling stroke: difficulty speaking, numbness or weakness in the face, arm, or leg, trouble walking, facial drooping, a severe headache, dizziness, or confusion
If any of these occur, the right move is the nearest emergency care available to you at that moment, not a message to the clinic where you were treated. Contacting the clinic comes after.
Records to Collect Before You Fly Home
For a doctor back home to assess your situation, they need to know what was done, where, and how much. Korean medical law gives patients the right to review their own treatment records or obtain copies. Before departure, it is worth confirming:
- The procedure name and treated area
- The product or device name used
- Any prescribed medication and how long to take it
- The contact channel for questions after you return
Ask during consultation what format and language the record will be provided in. Requesting it the morning of your flight often leaves too little time to prepare.
Sauna, Hot Springs, and Home Care Products
When it is safe to return to a sauna or hot spring depends on the procedure, the treated area, and how your skin is responding. Rather than giving a single number of days that applies to everything, I prefer to set a resumption point for each procedure you receive. If a hot spring trip is already on your itinerary right after your Korea visit, mention that timing during consultation.
The same applies to home care products. Whether an exfoliant or a high-concentration active you already use at home can resume right away depends on what you had done, so bring the product names and we can check each one in consultation.
How Long Effects Last and When to Plan a Return Visit
Retreatment intervals differ by procedure. The American Academy of Dermatology notes that botulinum toxin improvement typically lasts about 3 to 4 months, sometimes longer. Merz Aesthetics stated in a 2025 announcement that Ultherapy facial results can last up to a year or more.
I suggest treating these figures as a rough reference for planning your next visit to Korea rather than a fixed calendar entry. The actual retreatment timing should be set after your skin is reassessed at that point.
A Quick Checklist Before You Leave
- Confirm which line on the quote covers same-day calming care
- Confirm available recheck dates and cost if you need one during your stay
- Confirm the contact channel and response language for after you return
- Get the procedure name, treated area, product name, and any prescription in writing before departure
- Ask for a separate sauna or hot spring resumption timeline for each procedure you received
- If you are a UHC hotel guest, decide in advance whether you want the oxygen chamber session or the vitamin IV
FAQ
Can I have my consultation in a language other than Korean?
Our Gangnam branch has interpreter staff available for Japanese, Chinese, and English. For anything involving cost, such as what aftercare includes, confirming the quote line by line through an interpreter helps avoid misunderstandings.
Can procedures be done in a private room?
At our Gangnam branch, procedures take place in a private room. Because this location is inside UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam, guests staying at that hotel move between the treatment room and their room within the same building.
Can my local doctor take over follow-up care after I return home?
Whether a local doctor takes over is a judgment they make after their own examination. Having the procedure name, treated area, product or device used, and any prescribed medication on record helps a local doctor understand your situation, so it is worth securing that record before you leave.
What should I consider if my stay in Korea is short?
The procedures we can recommend depend on your arrival and departure dates and what is scheduled right after you return, whether that is work, an event, or more travel. Sharing those dates before consultation lets us plan around the recovery time you actually have.
Bring your travel dates and the procedures you are considering, and we can check which of the four stages above apply, line by line, against your quote during consultation.
