Allergan vs Xeomin: What Are the Differences?

Hello! 😊
Welcome to UH CELL Gangnam (formerly Doctor Petit Clinic Gangnam), located near Gangnam Station Exit 4 in Seoul, the center of Korean aesthetic medicine.
With many weather events happening recently, we are grateful that Seoul has avoided any major damage.
We hope all of you have been staying safe and taking care of yourselves.

Today, we’ll be discussing a topic that many patients frequently ask about during consultations:
“Allergan vs Xeomin: What are the differences?”

Botox treatments are very popular at Korean aesthetic clinics in Gangnam, Seoul, as they are relatively comfortable procedures with effective results.
However, terms like “Allergan” and “Xeomin” may feel a little unfamiliar to some people. Let’s take a closer look at what makes them different.

Botox is a treatment that uses a toxin-derived ingredient, specifically a substance derived from Clostridium botulinum.

The name “Botox” is actually a specific brand name, but it has become widely used as a general term for botulinum toxin procedures.
A simple way to understand this is similar to how brand names like “Scotch Tape” or “Pritt Stick” are commonly used as general terms, even though they originally refer to specific brands.

Allergan Botox

Developed by Allergan in the United States, it is considered the original botulinum toxin product.

As one of the most widely used botulinum toxin products worldwide,
it is also the representative case where the treatment itself became commonly known as “Botox.”

However, when treatments are repeated at short intervals, higher-than-recommended doses are used, or due to protein components that may be present during the manufacturing process,
the possibility of developing resistance has been discussed.

It is also important to note that larger molecules may be more easily recognized as foreign substances by the body, which may increase the chance of antibody formation.

If possible, choosing a more purified toxin with fewer unnecessary proteins can be one option to consider.

The product that is often mentioned in relation to this point is Xeomin.

Xeomin

Xeomin is a botulinum toxin product developed by Merz in Germany. Through multiple purification processes, it minimizes unnecessary protein components.

Because of its relatively pure formulation, smaller molecular structure, and lower concerns regarding antibody formation, Xeomin is often considered an option for those who are concerned about developing resistance during aesthetic treatments

However, some patients may perceive the effect of Xeomin as slightly softer compared to Allergan, depending on individual response and treatment areas.

To summarize

  • Allergan → A traditional and well-established original product with a long history of use
  • Xeomin → A purified botulinum toxin product with fewer concerns regarding resistance

Both products have their own distinct advantages, so it is difficult to say that one is absolutely better than the other.

Price & Selection Guide

Allergan and Xeomin are imported products, so they generally have a higher cost compared to domestic products.

The price may also vary depending on:

  • Treatment area
  • Dosage uses
  • Clinic promotions or special offers
