Changing Brown Spots: Check Before Laser

Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Yeon-jin, representative director of UHCELL Clinic Gangnam.
A brown spot in the mirror can send you straight to a laser search. If its shape or color differs from an older photograph, change that order: identify the spot before planning to fade it. I don’t choose the same treatment simply because two marks share a color.
Brown is a color, not a diagnosis
Color isn’t enough.
A broad patch of pigment and a new, isolated spot need different questions. When did it appear? Has it changed? Does it stand out from your other marks? Dark doesn’t automatically mean dangerous, and pale doesn’t automatically mean harmless.
If examination raises concern, medical assessment by a dermatologist comes before cosmetic treatment. A biopsy may be considered when appropriate; not every spot needs one.
Look at change as well as size
Small spots count too.
Notice asymmetry, an uneven border, several colors within one spot, or a change in size, shape or color. A diameter of 6 mm is a reference point, not a safety cutoff. Smaller lesions can also need assessment.
Report a new spot, one that looks unlike the others, or itching and bleeding. These signs don’t diagnose a particular disease, and neither a photograph nor a home checklist can rule one out.
Bring four pieces of information
Keep the record simple.
Note when you first noticed it, changes in shape or color, itching or bleeding, and previous procedures on that site. Bring older photographs if you have them. Date new photos and use similar lighting and distance without filters or retouching.
Don’t delay an appointment to assemble pictures. I wouldn’t leave a changing lesion waiting another month just to suit a cosmetic schedule. Avoid picking or aggressive exfoliation, and mention the names and dates of any creams or laser treatments.
Plan pigment treatment after assessment
Order matters.
Even a benign pigment lesion needs an individual plan based on depth, distribution and skin condition. I’m cautious about using one device for every brown mark or promising removal in one visit. Treatment response and recovery vary.
My priority is to assess concerning changes, not conceal them with cosmetic laser first. Once that evaluation is complete, sun exposure and previous treatment reactions can inform the next step.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Does no pain mean it’s just an age spot?
No. A new or changing spot deserves medical review even without pain. Mention changes in shape or color, itching and bleeding.
Can a spot under 6 mm go straight to laser?
Size alone doesn’t determine suitability. Change, symmetry, borders and color also need assessment.
What if I don’t have an older photograph?
You can still be examined. Explain when you noticed the spot, how it changed, symptoms and any previous procedures.
At UHCELL Clinic Gangnam, pigment-laser consultations start with the appearance and history of the spot. Concerning findings need medical assessment first. The featured photograph shows the actual clinic interior, not a skin lesion.
