Why Eyelid Drooping and Dry Eyes Matter Before Botox

Hello, I’m Dr. Yeonjin Kim, Medical Director of UHCELL Clinic Gangnam.

If you want to soften forehead lines but your eyelids often feel heavy, discuss both concerns. Dry eyes and a habit of raising your eyebrows to open your eyes comfortably also matter. A photograph of wrinkles cannot show everything.

I do not recommend choosing treatment strength from wrinkle depth alone. Difficulty opening the eyes and skin lines may be different problems.

Does your forehead help you open your eyes?

Think about reading and screen use, not just looking in a mirror. Do you keep your eyebrows raised? Is one eyelid heavier? Does the discomfort increase by evening? Some people may rely on their forehead muscles to help open their eyes.

A treatment that changes forehead or frown-line muscle movement needs to be considered alongside that pattern. Eyelid drooping does not automatically rule out every botulinum toxin treatment. But deeper wrinkles do not justify using the same sites and dose for everyone.

I place importance on distinguishing areas that need treatment from conditions that call for restraint. If the cause of drooping is unclear or eye-opening function is affected, assessment of that symptom comes before cosmetic treatment.

Discuss dryness and eye surgery separately

Note gritty eyes, frequent redness, artificial tear use or discomfort with contact lenses. Mention a dry-eye diagnosis, previous eyelid or eye-area surgery, and planned surgery. The names of current eye drops and prescription medicines are helpful too.

Patient information for botulinum toxin products asks patients to disclose drooping eyelids, changes around the eyes and previous facial surgery. Some products also list dry eyes or visual changes as possible adverse effects. Indications and precautions differ, so one product’s information cannot simply be applied to every product.

A sensation of dryness alone does not identify the cause. Explain when it happens, how long it lasts and whether it has been diagnosed.

Write down the previous product, date and area

If you recently had injections elsewhere, provide the product name, date and area. Check the previous information sheet or treatment record if you cannot remember. Include other areas, such as the jaw, rather than listing only forehead treatment.

For example, BOTOX patient information asks about other botulinum toxin products used within the previous four months. This is a disclosure window, not a universal four-month treatment interval. Units from different products cannot be directly substituted.

If your eyelids felt heavier or your eyes became drier after earlier treatment, record when that started and how recovery progressed. A previously uneventful treatment does not establish your current condition.

Sudden visual changes need care before a cosmetic appointment

Seek prompt medical assessment if sudden eyelid drooping occurs with double vision, reduced vision or severe eye pain. Do not wait for your Botox consultation. Long-standing discomfort and a new change need to be distinguished.

After treatment, difficulty swallowing, trouble breathing or generalized muscle weakness requires immediate emergency care. These are not symptoms to dismiss as ordinary swelling.

Wrinkles and comfortable eye function both deserve consideration. Botox is not a solution for every cause of drooping or dryness. Your condition may call for a different area or approach, or postponement.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do dry eyes automatically rule out Botox?

No decision can be made from dryness alone. Discuss symptom severity, the eye area, current eye drops and the proposed injection sites with your clinician.

Should I mention a habit of raising my eyebrows?

Yes. It may help assess whether you rely on forehead muscles to open your eyes. Explain your usual pattern rather than forcing yourself to relax for a photo.

Should I mention injections in another area?

Provide the product, date and area. Units and precautions vary by product, so treatment elsewhere also needs review.

Before a forehead-line consultation, note any difficulty opening your eyes and any dryness. Recent injection records and eye-drop names can also help.

Describe your current condition at UHCELL Clinic Gangnam and discuss eye-area function alongside the proposed treatment.
