Before Fractional Laser: Mention Your Cold Sore History

  • Laser Skin Treatment

Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Yeon-jin, Chief Physician at UHCELL Clinic Gangnam.

You’re looking at acne scars on your cheeks, but the consultation form asks about blisters on your lips. The two areas may seem unrelated. Tell us even if the blisters have cleared. That question helps us assess both the treatment plan and the conditions for your skin to heal.

When choosing a laser, I consider scar depth, treatment area, and the time available for recovery. A history of recurring symptoms matters even when the skin looks calm today.

Why mention a cold sore that has healed?

Appearance isn’t the whole picture. Cold sores are associated with herpes simplex virus, which can remain dormant after the blisters resolve. Skin resurfacing laser treatment can trigger reactivation, so a history of outbreaks is relevant.

Fractional lasers deliver heat in small, separate treatment zones. Their effect on the skin surface varies with the device and settings. Precautions and preventive medication plans aren’t identical for every laser. Having had a cold sore also doesn’t mean you can never have facial treatment.

Tingling before your appointment? Call first

Don’t wait for a blister. A cold sore may start with tingling or burning before anything is visible. If that sensation develops where you usually have outbreaks, tell your treatment clinic before attending.

Not every cracked or red lip is a cold sore. Irritation and other causes need to be considered. A photo can help document changes, but it cannot establish the diagnosis on its own. Blisters, oozing, crusts, or suspected infection require assessment before the planned procedure and may mean changing the date.

Four things to note before consultation

Write down what you remember. If you never had a diagnosis, simply describe recurring blisters at the edge of your lip.

  • When the last episode happened and where it usually appears
  • Roughly how many episodes you had in the past year
  • Previous diagnoses and names of prescribed medicines
  • Current medicines, allergies, and any treatment affecting your immune system

I’m cautious about comparing laser plans solely by the price of one session. Assessment of the treatment area and recovery conditions belongs in that comparison too. A consultation reminder: discuss the planned cheek and mouth-area treatment boundaries as well as your lip symptoms.

Preventive medication needs an individual plan

There is no single prescription for everyone. Your clinician reviews your history, the procedure, and its extent to decide whether preventive antiviral medication is appropriate. When to start and how long to take it depend on that plan.

Don’t take leftover tablets or someone else’s medication. Allergies, kidney conditions, and current medicines also affect prescribing decisions. Prevention does not eliminate the risk of recurrence or infection. After treatment, contact the clinic for new blisters, worsening pain, spreading redness, or oozing rather than assuming these are normal healing. Lesions near an eye, eye pain, or changes in vision need prompt medical attention.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do I need to mention one episode years ago?

Yes. Share what you remember. One episode does not automatically determine a preventive prescription, but it is relevant medical history.

Can I keep my appointment if I use a cream?

Using a cream alone doesn’t establish that treatment can proceed. The current lesion and the planned treatment area need assessment.

Am I risk-free if I’ve never had a cold sore?

No known history does not mean zero risk. Know the clinic’s aftercare contact instructions and report new symptoms.
