How to Keep Lifting Results Going After You Fly Home

  • Lifting Treatment

Getting the most out of a lifting procedure depends less on the treatment day itself and more on the weeks of recovery and handoff that follow it. In focused-ultrasound lifting studies, improvement builds gradually and peaks around three months after treatment, with much of that improvement holding through nine to twelve months, while redness, swelling, and bruising typically settle within a few days to three weeks. When choosing a Gangnam clinic, ask directly about the recovery space and flow, which aftercare items carry a separate cost, and how the clinic hands off your records once you’re back home.

Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Yeonjin, director of UH CELL Clinic’s Gangnam branch.

If you’re planning a lifting procedure from abroad, what happens after the treatment often worries patients more than the treatment itself. Your time in Korea is short, but the result only finishes taking shape once you’re back home. South Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare reported in April 2026 that 2.01 million foreign patients sought treatment in the country during 2025, and dermatology accounted for roughly 1.31 million of those visits, more than any other department. If your itinerary is tight, you’ll likely board a flight within days of your procedure. That’s why I build a post-return care plan alongside the treatment plan itself during consultation.

When Do Lifting Results Peak, and How Long Do They Last?

Ulthera and similar microfocused ultrasound (MFU) devices create small points of heat coagulation at a set depth under the skin. New collagen forms around those points, and that new collagen is what restores firmness. Because collagen production takes time, the visible result also takes time to arrive.

Researchers writing in Aesthetic Plastic Surgery (2025) followed 28 women aged 33 to 55 for twelve months after a single MFU session. Improvement measured by facial volume change was greatest at the three-month mark and remained meaningful through nine to twelve months. Results varied by area: the area under the chin held its improvement longest, while the nasolabial area responded differently depending on the shape of the existing wrinkle.

A systematic review published in the International Journal of Environmental Research and Public Health (2023) pooled 16 studies of single-session MFU. At 90 days, investigator assessments found improvement in tightness or wrinkles in 92% of cases, and that improvement carried through to the one-year mark. The review’s authors were clear that no long-term data exists past one year, and every study they included enrolled only female participants.

A few things follow from this. Departure day is not the day to judge your final result; the peak comes around three months later, once you’re already home. Claims of results lasting one to two years go further than the current evidence, which supports roughly one year, so I describe that one-year window as the range we can actually back up. And because the same procedure holds up differently by area and facial structure, an accurate pre-treatment read on which layer and which area is causing the sagging matters more than the device brand itself.

The First Three Weeks: What to Expect and What to Watch

Ulthera’s official site (2026) states that most patients can return to daily activity following their provider’s guidance, and that initial redness tends to fade within hours. Recovery is individual, though, so it helps to know a slightly longer timeline going in.

A multidisciplinary consensus paper published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology (2026), drawing on 26 papers from 2015 to 2025, mapped out when reactions after MFU tend to resolve.

Timing Commonly reported reaction What I check in consultation
Day of treatment to 48 hours Redness, mild tenderness Whether redness is fading or staying localized
Within about 8 days Swelling Left-right symmetry, whether swelling is trending down
Within about 20 days Bruising Whether the area is spreading
Rare, at 4 to 6 weeks Temporary motor nerve weakness, pigment change in darker skin Flagged in advance as signs to contact us about immediately

The same paper described severe complications as rare, but pointed to risk factors that sit largely on the practitioner’s side: poor contact between the transducer and the skin, energy delivered repeatedly over the same spot, and insufficient training in positioning and imaging. A 2025 meta-analysis in Aesthetic Surgery Journal reached a similar conclusion, that adverse events were mostly mild to moderate with no long-term sequelae reported, while also noting that neutral patient responses may have been coded as improvement in some studies, which could inflate reported effectiveness.

I mention that practitioner-side risk directly in consultation because it’s relevant to who is holding the device. I trained at Seoul National University’s graduate school and completed my residency at Seoul National University Hospital, and I currently serve as an Ultherapy Z and Potenza Key Doctor and as Allergan faculty for Juvederm and Botox. That background shapes how I choose depth and density settings, but individual variation in outcome still applies regardless of who performs the procedure.

Our Gangnam Recovery Flow: Care Continues Inside the Hotel

Our Gangnam branch sits on the second and third floors of UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam, a hotel in the same group at 13 Teheran-ro 8-gil. Because the clinic operates as an on-site amenity of that hotel rather than a separate building, guests staying there can go straight from treatment to their room without stepping outside. Procedures are done in a private treatment room.

For rest afterward, guests of UHC group hotels can choose one complimentary recovery option: a 30-minute oxygen chamber session or a vitamin IV drip. Using both is available too, with the vitamin IV priced at 55,000 KRW when added on. This benefit applies specifically to guests of UHC hotels, and the full conditions are listed on our promotions page. Both the oxygen chamber and the IV drip are comfort-oriented recovery services. There’s no evidence available to us that either one improves the lifting result itself.

Our Gangnam branch also has interpreting staff on hand who work in Japanese, Chinese, and English, so aftercare instructions can be reviewed in your own language and follow-up questions don’t run into a language barrier. For a closer look at how the recovery stages connect through to departure, see Recovering From a Skin Procedure in Seoul: What to Expect.

Is Aftercare Included in the Procedure Price?

This varies enough between clinics that there’s no single honest answer. What I recommend is asking for your quote broken down by line item. What I can confirm in writing here, for our Gangnam branch, is the UHC hotel guest benefit above and its conditions. Everything else belongs in your consultation quote.

Questions worth asking at that consultation:

  • Does the quote include a follow-up visit while you’re still in the country?
  • If swelling or bruising runs longer than expected, is there an additional soothing treatment, and does it cost extra?
  • What’s the contact channel once you’re home, and in which language will you get a response?
  • Can progress be checked by photo, and if so, what do those photos need to show?

Whether you get clear answers to these questions is a practical way to judge a clinic’s follow-up system before you commit.

What Your Home-Country Doctor Needs If You Return With Concerns

If swelling lingers after you’re home, or you end up seeing a local provider for a follow-up procedure, that provider needs to know what was actually done in Korea. Relying on memory is riskier than leaving with records. Before you fly out, I recommend collecting:

  • The procedure name and device used (for example, Ulthera or Thermage)
  • The date and treated area
  • The depth setting (transducer) and shot count or energy level used
  • The anesthesia method and any prescribed medication
  • Any reactions during your stay and how they progressed

Photos count as records too. Taking them under the same lighting and angle before treatment, and again at one week, one month, and three months, makes it easier to compare change around the three-month peak and gives you something concrete when deciding on a follow-up session.

When Can You Return to Sauna, Hot Springs, or Exercise?

I haven’t found a consistent day count in the literature for when sauna or hot spring use is safe again. So I judge by skin condition rather than the calendar. Once redness and swelling have settled, and pressing on the area no longer feels painful or warm, that’s the point where adding more heat is reasonable. Since the table above shows redness typically clearing within 48 hours and swelling within about 8 days for most patients, I use that as a starting reference and confirm individually based on how your stay is progressing.

Vigorous exercise follows the same logic. Hold off while swelling or tenderness remains, and use sunscreen carefully whenever you’re outdoors. If you’re planning to combine lifting with another laser or injectable procedure, the spacing between treatments needs to be set individually, so mention that plan during consultation.

How Often Should You Come Back? Reassessment, Not a Calendar

The evidence we have covers roughly one year of maintained results, and data past that point is still limited. Aging also continues in the background regardless of treatment. Rather than setting a fixed “come back every few months” rule, I prefer comparing your three-month photos against a fresh assessment at your next visit to decide whether and when a repeat session makes sense.

If you’re combining lifting with a skin booster, keep in mind the two procedures don’t share the same maintenance timeline or the same depth of evidence, so they need separate reassessment schedules. We’ve covered the skin booster side of that in more detail in How Long Do Rejuran and HA Skin Boosters Really Last?.

Before You Fly Home: Checklist

  • Have you received your procedure record (device, date, area, depth, shot count, prescriptions)?
  • Do you have before photos, plus a plan for 1-week, 1-month, and 3-month photos?
  • Have you confirmed the contact channel for follow-up questions and what language it’s handled in?
  • Does your quote itemize follow-up visits and any additional care separately?
  • Do you know the expected course of swelling and bruising, and which signs mean you should contact us right away?
  • If you’re staying at a UHC hotel, have you decided between the oxygen chamber and the vitamin IV drip?

FAQ

Can I get lifting at the Gangnam branch if I’m not staying at the hotel?

Yes. The complimentary choice between a 30-minute oxygen chamber session and a vitamin IV drip is specifically for UHC hotel guests, though. If you’re staying elsewhere, it’s worth deciding on your transport and rest location before booking.

Is it safe to fly the day after treatment?

Ultherapy’s official guidance says most patients can resume daily activity following their provider’s instructions. I generally recommend scheduling treatment early in your stay so we can check your skin once more before departure, and I advise against rubbing your face firmly during the flight.

Do I need to buy special homecare products?

A gentle cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen are usually enough to start, and avoiding firm rubbing or massage over the treated area matters more than any specific product. If your skin is sensitive, let us know what you’re currently using during consultation.

What if my doctor back home won’t treat me because the procedure was done in Korea?

Bringing your procedure record and progress photos makes it far easier for a local doctor to assess your case. If they need anything confirmed, you’re welcome to reach out to our Gangnam branch directly, and our interpreting staff can assist in Japanese, Chinese, or English.
