Losing Weight but Want to Keep Facial Volume? Sculptra & HIFU May Be the Answer

Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Yeon-Jin, Medical Director of UH CELL Gangnam (formerly Dr. Petit Clinic Gangnam).

Today, I’d like to talk about Sculptra, one of the most frequently requested treatments at our Gangnam clinic, and how it can help restore facial volume while maintaining a natural-looking appearance.

As summer approaches, many people become more focused on weight loss.

One concern I hear frequently is, “I want to lose weight, but I don’t want to lose the volume in my face—especially my cheeks.” Many patients are looking for a slimmer body while maintaining a naturally youthful, full facial appearance, making this an increasingly common concern in aesthetic practice.

In fact, full, well-defined cheeks are often considered an important feature of a youthful appearance.
However, it’s not realistically possible to lose fat from only specific areas of the body. Because the cheeks also contain fat, facial volume often decreases along with overall weight loss. Rapid weight loss can also contribute to reduced skin elasticity, making the face appear more hollow or tired.

For patients with these concerns, Sculptra can be an excellent treatment option. Recently, it has also been consistently recognized in the field of Korean aesthetic medicine as a treatment for achieving natural-looking facial volume restoration.

So, what exactly is Sculptra?

Sculptra is a product developed by Galderma and is one of the most well-known collagen biostimulator treatments. After being injected into the skin, its PLLA (poly-L-lactic acid) particles gradually break down and stimulate the body’s natural collagen production.

As this process takes place, the skin becomes thicker and natural-looking volume is gradually restored. Unlike fillers, which simply add volume, Sculptra works as a collagen stimulator, encouraging your skin to restore volume on its own. This approach has been gaining increasing popularity in Korea as well.

One of its key characteristics is that it is gradually broken down into water and carbon dioxide in the body, leaving no permanent residue. Originally, it was developed as a treatment to restore facial fat loss associated with HIV, and its biocompatibility has long been established, with the material also being used in medical sutures for many years.

It has also received U.S. FDA approval, with its safety and effectiveness having been validated over many years. This background is also an important consideration when choosing aesthetic treatments in Korea.

When Can You Expect to See Results?

You may notice an immediate increase in volume right after the procedure, but this is only a temporary effect caused by the diluting solution. After about one week, this initial volume gradually subsides, and collagen production begins around 2–3 weeks after treatment.

Although results vary from person to person, studies have reported that the effects can last for around two years. This long-lasting effect is one of the reasons why the treatment has a high level of patient satisfaction in Seoul.

In general, 3–4 treatment sessions per vial are recommended. However, if the treatment is focused on a specific area, such as the lateral cheeks or anterior cheeks, 1–2 sessions may be sufficient to achieve

There’s also a reason why we often recommend combining it with HIFU.

This is because the two treatments complement each other.

HIFU helps lift sagging tissue and reduce unnecessary volume, while Sculptra restores volume where it is needed. In other words, one treatment reduces volume where it is excessive and restores volume where it is lacking, helping to create a more balanced facial contour.

This combined approach is considered an important strategy in Korean aesthetic medicine.

Another reason is that the two treatments work at overlapping tissue depths.

Sculptra acts from the deep dermis to the subcutaneous layer, while HIFU delivers energy down to the SMAS layer. As both treatments stimulate the skin’s natural regenerative response, they can produce a synergistic effect when performed together.

This approach is also becoming increasingly common in Korea.

Post-Treatment Care Is Also Important.

The most important part of post-treatment care is massage.

Some of you may have heard about nodules in relation to Sculptra. However, recent studies have reported that the incidence is less than 0.5%, making it relatively uncommon.

That said, it is important to follow the “5-5-5 rule.”

For approximately 5 days after the procedure, massage the treated area 5 times a day for 5 minutes each time. This helps ensure more stable post-treatment care.

This is a standard aftercare instruction provided by clinics in Seoul as well.

How Should You Choose the Right Clinic?

This is something I’ve consistently emphasized since my time at Dr. Petit Clinic Gangnam.

Because Sculptra is supplied as a powder that must be reconstituted before use, the hydration process and treatment protocol are extremely important.

Using the authentic product in the appropriate amount is essential, and the physician’s experience in carefully designing facial volume is equally important.

Especially in areas like Gangnam, where there are many treatment options available, it’s important to make your choice carefully.

Be sure to choose a clinic that can provide a personalized treatment plan based on your individual facial structure and skin condition.

This standard is becoming increasingly emphasized in Korean aesthetic medicine.

Finally

Sculptra is more than just a volumizing treatment—it can be thought of as a collagen-based lifting treatment that delivers gradual, natural-looking improvement over time. It is particularly well suited for those who want subtle, natural-looking results without an overdone appearance.

This preference for natural-looking outcomes has also become an ongoing trend in Korean aesthetic medicine.

This has been Dr. Kim Yeon-Jin, Medical Director of UH CELL Gangnam. Building on experience with a wide variety of clinical cases, I continue to provide personalized consultations and treatments at our Gangnam clinic.

We continue to consult on a wide range of facial volume concerns and strive to deliver highly satisfying results as a leading skin clinic in Seoul.
