Makeup Timing After Ulthera, Rejuran, or Potenza Explained

  • Skin Care

Whether you can wear makeup after a skin procedure depends less on the treatment’s name than on whether it left a needle channel or microchannel open in the surface of your skin. Ulthera and Thermage work on deeper layers without breaking the surface, so light makeup is often fine the same day or the next if your skin feels comfortable, while an injectable booster like Rejuran Healer typically calls for about 24 hours and a microneedling device like Potenza often needs one to two days or longer. If you have a wedding, a business trip, or a flight home on a fixed date, plan backward from when swelling or bruising will fade, not from the first day makeup is technically allowed.

Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Yeonjin, Director of UH CELL Clinic’s Gangnam location.

Patients ask me this question constantly before a wedding, between stops on a business trip, or the night before a flight home. I answer it in two separate steps. First, I check when makeup products can safely touch the skin again. Second, I look at whether that day’s skin will actually look presentable under makeup. Those two points sometimes land on the same day and sometimes sit a week apart.

What Actually Delays Makeup

Most of the delay comes from what happened at the skin’s surface, not from the treatment category. While a needle channel or microchannel is still open, the ingredients in foundation or concealer, along with contamination from hands or brushes, can enter that channel and cause irritation or breakouts. Post-procedure guidance published by several medical institutions overseas generally tells microneedling patients to avoid makeup for at least 24 hours, and sometimes 48 to 72 hours.

Ultrasound and radiofrequency energy that reaches deep skin layers without breaking the surface is a different situation. Here the reason to wait is heat, redness, and occasionally bruising rather than an open channel. That is why two treatments both marketed as “lifting” can carry very different makeup timelines once you know how the device actually works.

Makeup Timing by Procedure Type

The table below summarizes the general ranges found in published post-procedure guidance. Your actual timing depends on the energy setting, treatment depth, treated area, and your own skin, so we confirm specifics in consultation.

Category Example procedures Skin surface Typical makeup timing Hard-to-cover reactions
Non-ablative energy lifting Ulthera, Thermage No break in surface Same day if comfortable, next day for a safer margin Temporary redness, occasional bruising or localized swelling
Injectable skin booster Rejuran Healer Injection marks and small raised bumps Light makeup from about 24 hours Raised bumps at injection sites, needle-mark bruising
Radiofrequency microneedling Potenza Many microchannels Next day at the earliest, often 48 hours or more depending on depth Redness, dryness, flaking

Guidance published by overseas medical institutions on Ulthera generally states that patients can wear makeup right after the procedure if their skin feels comfortable. Some of the same sources recommend letting the skin rest on treatment day and starting with a light base the next morning, and a few note that bruising can take a few days to appear. If you have a wedding coming up soon, factor in that delayed bruising.

Rejuran Healer leaves a small raised bump at each injection site immediately afterward. Guidance from medical institutions in Korea and overseas generally states these bumps settle within one to two days, though they can take three to seven days in some cases, and recommends starting light makeup around 24 hours later. Because the bump is a texture issue rather than a color issue, a thick layer of foundation can make it more visible instead of less.

Other injectable boosters, such as Skinvive or Juvelook, also leave injection marks. The exact pattern of bumps and swelling varies by formulation and injection technique, so rather than applying the Rejuran Healer numbers above to a different product, I recommend confirming the specific timeline for that formulation in consultation.

Guidance on Potenza covers a wide range. Guidance published by an aesthetic medical clinic in Japan allows makeup from the next day while also advising patients to avoid all facial products, including sunscreen, on treatment day itself. Guidance from medical institutions in the United States on radiofrequency microneedling more often centers on roughly 48 hours. Guidance from a medical institution in Japan on standard microneedling (Dermapen) recommends one to two days off makeup at a 0.5mm needle depth and around a week at 2.0 to 3.0mm, which shows how much depth alone can shift the timeline even within the same device category.

Working Backward From a Fixed Date

Downtime planning guidance published by a Japanese dermatology clinic treats travel or outdoor events as their own category. Rather than assuming any residual redness or bruising can always be fully covered, it recommends choosing a date where some visible redness or bruising would not actually cause a problem. The same guidance also notes that makeup applied to hide a bruise tends to increase friction on the skin.

Because of that, I ask about the nature of the event before the treatment. A wedding or a photo shoot puts your face close to a camera and close attention. A meeting or a business trip usually only needs skin that looks fine under normal makeup. The buffer below reflects that difference, built from the guidance ranges above plus a margin for individual variation. It is a planning starting point, not a studied threshold.

Event type Energy lifting (Ulthera, Thermage) Injectable booster (Rejuran Healer) RF microneedling (Potenza)
Close-up events (wedding, photography) At least 2-3 days before About a week before, to allow for longer bump or bruise cases A week or more before
Meetings or business travel The day before can work 2-3 days before At least 3-4 days before

For a Saturday wedding, for example, Rejuran Healer would land around the weekend before, while Ulthera or Thermage could be scheduled as late as the preceding Wednesday, adjusted after we check your skin in consultation. If you bruise easily or take medication or supplements that affect circulation, build in extra margin.

Recovering on the Day of Your Procedure

The hours right after your procedure matter as much as the makeup timeline itself. Downtime guidance also lists sun exposure, sweat, friction, and long baths as factors that affect recovery. Spending that window walking under strong sun or riding crowded transit adds stress to skin that cannot yet be covered with makeup.

Our Gangnam location sits on the second and third floors of the UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam building on Teheran-ro 8-gil, which is part of the UHC hotel group. Guests staying at this hotel can go straight from treatment to their room and rest with a bare face rather than stepping back outside. Procedures take place in private treatment rooms, and our Gangnam location has Japanese, Chinese, and English interpreters on staff.

UHC hotel guests can also choose one complimentary recovery option: a 30-minute oxygen chamber session or a vitamin IV drip. Using both in the same stay means the IV drip costs 55,000 KRW. Full terms are listed on our promotion page. I have no basis to say this recovery care moves up your makeup timeline, so that timeline should still be judged by the skin-surface factors above.

Caring for Your Skin on Travel Days

On a day you are flying home or traveling to another city, sun protection matters more than makeup. For treatments like Ulthera that do not break the skin’s surface, published guidance generally recommends SPF 30 or higher sunscreen afterward. For a procedure like Potenza, where some guidance advises skipping sunscreen on treatment day itself, a hat or umbrella that does not touch the skin is the safer way to block sun that day.

If a flight is part of your schedule, treat swelling and warmth as a separate question from makeup timing. I covered the next-day flight question for Ulthera patients in Flying After Ultherapy? Let Symptoms Set Your Timeline.

Before Your Consultation, Have This Ready

  • The date of your wedding, trip, or flight, and whether your face will be seen up close or photographed that day
  • The area and extent of treatment you are considering, whether that is the whole face or a specific area like the jawline
  • Whether you bruise easily, and any medications or supplements you currently take
  • The type of base makeup you normally wear, such as liquid, cushion, or powder
  • Where you plan to be and how you will travel right after the procedure

FAQ

Does sunscreen follow the same timing as makeup?

It depends on the procedure category. Non-ablative energy lifting that does not break the skin’s surface is often fine with sunscreen use afterward, and guidance generally recommends applying it. Potenza and other treatments that open microchannels sometimes come with guidance to avoid all facial products, including sunscreen, on treatment day, so confirm what you can apply, product by product, in consultation.

Can I still wear eye or lip makeup if those areas weren’t treated?

Makeup on an untreated area is often judged separately from the treated area. Still, consider whether removing eye makeup would mean rubbing near the treated zone, or whether remover could run into it. If your treatment plan includes the eye or lip area, that area follows the same timing as the rest of the treated skin.

What if my skin stings or turns red after I apply makeup the next day?

Remove the makeup gently and apply only a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer, then rest for about a day. Published post-procedure guidance generally advises contacting the treating clinic if swelling does not go down or gets worse, if pain increases, or if you notice pus or spreading redness. If you see any of these changes, send a photo and let us know right away.

Which products should I use when I start wearing makeup again?

Start with a light base that spreads thinly, applied with clean hands or freshly washed tools using a patting motion rather than rubbing, since that reduces friction. Guidance generally recommends holding off on retinol or exfoliating products until your skin feels fully settled.

If you have a date on your calendar that cannot move, tell me that date and what kind of event it is before we talk about which procedure. Once I know your skin’s condition, we can work backward from that date together. From there we plan both the treatment timing and your recovery.
