Neck lifting: distinguish horizontal lines from loose skin

Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Yeon-jin, Medical Director of UHCELL Clinic Gangnam.
A line on your neck does not automatically mean sagging skin. Horizontal folds, looseness below the chin, and fine surface wrinkles can appear together. Calling all of them neck wrinkles can make the treatment goal unclear.
I consider whether the concern is the line itself or a softer boundary between the chin and neck before focusing on its depth. A treatment described as lifting does not address every change in the same way.
Horizontal lines and laxity are different
Horizontal lines are folds running across the front of the neck. Repeated folding, individual anatomy, and age-related changes can all play a part. Younger people can have them too. Prolonged downward posture may contribute, but a phone is not necessarily the only explanation.
Laxity is different. Skin beneath the chin and across the neck becomes looser, changing the outline. Dryness-related fine lines can overlap. Pulling the skin upward by hand and seeing a fold fade does not identify the cause or determine a treatment.
A facial treatment plan is not a neck treatment plan
The thickness of neck skin and the structures beneath it need a separate assessment. A device, energy setting, or shot count that was suitable for your face is not automatically suitable for your neck. The intended area and areas to avoid come first.
More is not the answer. I place importance on separating areas that need treatment from those that should be avoided. Ultrasound or radiofrequency tightening addresses skin firmness. It does not erase every deep horizontal crease or remove excess skin as a surgical neck lift would.
What moisturizer and posture changes can do
Moisturizer can make dryness-related fine lines less noticeable. It does not lift loose tissue or fill a deep crease. A product your face tolerates may sting on your neck, so avoid layering several new exfoliating or concentrated products at once.
Start with the basics. Apply broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher to your neck, with clothing and shade outdoors. Adjusting screen height and changing position during long periods of looking down are sensible habits. They cannot be promised to remove longstanding lines.
Bring a history of the change
Prepare 4 details: when the concern began, recent weight changes, the names and dates of previous neck or under-chin treatments, and products you currently use. Include the areas treated with filler, threads, or surgery. Front and side photographs with your head in a natural position can help, but they do not replace an examination.
Separate the goals too. I do not treat making a deep fold less noticeable and improving a loose outline as the same objective. Ask what is outside a treatment’s scope and what may remain afterward. Redness, swelling, pain, and results vary between people. Be cautious about promises to solve everything in one session.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Do deep neck lines need a higher energy setting?
Depth alone does not determine the setting. A clinician needs to distinguish folds from laxity and assess your neck skin and previous treatments.
Can neck cream lift loose skin?
Moisturizer may soften the appearance of fine lines. It cannot change deep folds or loose tissue in the same way as a procedure or surgery.
Should I mention neck filler I had before?
Yes. Share any product name, area, date, and problems afterward that you remember. Those details matter when planning further treatment.
Start by identifying whether the concern is a neck line or the outline beneath your chin. At UHCELL Clinic Gangnam, we assess your current skin and treatment history and explain the options alongside their limits.
