Numbness after Ultherapy: when to call

- Skin Care
Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Yeon-jin, Representative Director of UHCELL Clinic Gangnam.
A tingling face after Ultherapy may seem like proof that the treatment reached its target. Does a numb patch mean the lift is developing too? These are separate questions.
I do not judge lifting results by the intensity of pain or tingling. A brief sensation during treatment differs from a sensory change that continues after you go home. Tell the treating clinic about new tingling even when the skin looks normal.
Describe the sensation, not just the photograph
Prickling, feeling less when the skin is touched, and tenderness when pressed describe different problems. Trouble moving the face when smiling is a movement change, not simply numbness.
Location matters. Is it along one side of the jaw, around the lips, or outside the treated area? A photo can show redness or swelling but cannot capture sensation. A normal-looking photo does not rule out a change that needs assessment.
A recovery range is not a waiting rule
Ultherapy delivers focused ultrasound heat. Its manufacturer lists temporary tingling, reduced sensation and local muscle weakness among possible reactions. Some clinical reactions eased within 2–6 weeks; longer-lasting nerve-related reactions have also been reported after marketing.
That does not mean you should wait six weeks or expect recovery by that date. Contact the treating clinic first. The location, severity and whether symptoms are worsening guide the assessment. Do not decide that a mild new sensation is too minor to report.
Four details to give your clinic
I consider which areas need treatment and which should be avoided, rather than seeking a stronger stimulus. If discomfort develops, adding another lifting treatment is not the next step. Assessment comes first.
Record four details: the treatment date and time symptoms started; the location and any left-right difference; whether it is tingling, reduced feeling or pain; and whether the area, intensity or facial movement is changing. Mention previous facial palsy, nerve symptoms and other treatments too.
Do not test sensation with a needle or a hot object. Avoid forceful pressure, massage and heat. Ask for specific guidance instead of adding medication or an ointment on your own.
Do not wait when movement or speech changes
New difficulty moving the mouth or closing an eye, worsening pain or blisters need prompt medical assessment. Reduced sensation alone cannot confirm nerve injury, but it is not a reason to skip assessment.
Sudden one-sided facial drooping, arm weakness or unclear speech needs emergency help—even if only one of these occurs. Do not assume it is a treatment reaction. Use local emergency medical services without waiting for the clinic to reply to a photo.
Recovery varies. An online article or someone else’s experience cannot determine your cause or recovery date. After contacting the clinic, clarify how to arrange review and what to do if symptoms worsen.
Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)
Does tingling mean more collagen is forming?
No. Tingling is not a measure of the treatment’s effect. Report new sensory changes to the treating clinic for assessment.
Can I wait 2–6 weeks if the area is numb?
That is a clinical observation range, not an individual waiting rule. Contact your clinic first and follow guidance based on the symptoms and their course.
Should I call if my photo looks normal?
Yes. Describe the onset, location, sensation and any worsening. Sudden facial drooping, arm weakness or speech changes need emergency care first.
If your treatment was at UHCELL Clinic Gangnam, contact us with your records. If it was elsewhere, begin with the clinic that treated you and seek the assessment you need.
