Thermage with a pacemaker or ICD?

Hello, I’m Dr. Yeonjin Kim, director of UHCELL Clinic Gangnam.

When considering Thermage, it is natural to focus on loose skin or the treatment area. An electrical implant needs attention first. I consider eligibility before discussing energy settings or expected results.

Does a heart device matter if only my face is treated?

Yes, it does.

Thermage uses radiofrequency energy to heat skin tissue. Its cosmetic purpose does not remove the need to check implanted devices. The manufacturer states that people with a cardiac pacemaker, implanted defibrillator or any other electrical implant should not undergo Thermage.

An implant in the chest and treatment on the face do not remove this contraindication. Tell the clinic about the device when booking, rather than listing medications alone.

Lower energy does not remove the contraindication

This is not just about heat.

Skin discomfort and precautions for electrical medical devices are separate issues. Making treatment less painful or adjusting energy to the skin response is not a basis for changing the manufacturer’s contraindication. Electromagnetic-interference precautions also vary by device and medical procedure.

I do not put expected results or shot counts ahead of contraindication checks. Consulting your cardiac team does not itself lift the Thermage contraindication. Do not switch off a device or stop heart medication for cosmetic treatment.

Bring the device card and its exact name

Check the model, too.

If you have a device identification card, bring it. Note the name, model, implantation date, recent checks and the medical team following it. If the name is unclear, confirm it through your medical records or treating team before proceeding.

A metal dental restoration or a plate fixing a bone is not the same as an electrical implant. Equally, a small piece of metal is not automatically cleared for treatment. Its type and location and the treatment device’s instructions need separate review. If the implant type remains unclear, defer treatment while checking.

Is a different treatment automatically suitable?

No automatic clearance.

Ultrasound and lasers use different forms of energy from radiofrequency. A different name alone does not establish safety. The implanted device and each proposed procedure’s contraindications and precautions need individual assessment, alongside skin condition, medical history and medications.

A consultation need not end with booking a procedure. Deciding not to treat, or waiting for information, can be the right outcome. Keep the discussion of skin concerns separate from the safety assessment of an implanted heart device.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Can I have facial Thermage with a pacemaker?

No. Facial treatment does not remove the manufacturer’s contraindication. People with pacemakers, ICDs or other electrical implants should not undergo Thermage.

Can I temporarily switch the implant off?

Do not switch it off yourself for cosmetic treatment. Device changes or stopping medication are not a way to bypass the Thermage contraindication.

Is dental metal the same contraindication as a pacemaker?

It is not the same device category. The restoration type, location and treatment instructions need review; this article cannot determine individual suitability.

Before booking, prepare the exact implant name and relevant records. UHCELL Clinic Gangnam can begin with a consultation about your skin concerns and treatment eligibility.

※ Individual results and recovery periods may vary. We recommend consulting a specialist for an accurate medical diagnosis.
