Rejuran vs Skin Boosters vs Exosomes: Why Ranking Fails

2026/10/02

  • Skin Booster Treatment

Rejuran, skin boosters, and exosome treatments answer three different questions, not one ranking question. Rejuran names an ingredient family (polynucleotides), a skin booster names a delivery method that can carry several different fillers, and exosome in Korea currently refers to a topical cosmetic ingredient rather than an injectable. The most specific duration evidence available belongs to a crosslinked hyaluronic acid skin booster shown to hold its effect for at least six months, Rejuran’s texture improvement is best documented within three months of a treatment course, and exosome lacks standardized duration data altogether. If your time in Seoul is limited, deciding the ingredient, the delivery method, and the number of sessions first makes more sense than asking which option simply lasts longest.

Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Yeonjin, director of UH CELL Clinic’s Gangnam branch. “Which lasts longer and works better: Rejuran, a skin booster, or an exosome treatment?” is one of the most common questions I hear from patients chasing glass-skin results before a skin booster consultation. I don’t answer with a ranking right away. Instead, I go through what each of the three words actually refers to, because stacking different categories of names into one comparison table produces a result that doesn’t hold up.

What the Three Names Actually Refer To

Name What It Refers To Ingredient Delivery Regulatory Status in Korea
Rejuran (Rejuran Healer, Rejuran HB+, etc.) A product family built on one ingredient Polynucleotides (PN) purified from salmon or trout germ cell DNA Injected into the dermis Marketed as an injectable product
Skin booster A delivery method, not a single ingredient Usually hyaluronic acid (HA); crosslinking and composition vary by product Multiple small injections into the shallow dermis, by hand or multi-needle device Depends on which product is injected
Exosome A raw material name Extracellular vesicles from sources such as cultured stem cells Products sold in Korea are formulated for topical use Registered as a cosmetic ingredient

Laid out this way, “skin booster versus Rejuran” turns out to be a method pitted against an ingredient, and the two aren’t mutually exclusive. PN is sometimes delivered in booster fashion. A case report published in Skin Research and Technology described Rejuran PN injected into the dermis mixed with uncrosslinked hyaluronic acid, and the authors noted that this kind of combination is common in practice.

That’s why, in consultation, I ask about the change a patient wants before discussing product names: immediate hydration and glow, or a texture and elasticity change that unfolds over several weeks. How many visits fit into the trip also shapes the answer.

How Much Evidence Supports Rejuran (PN)?

PN was originally used in wound care, and its tissue-regenerating properties are why it expanded into aesthetics. Smaragda Lampridou and colleagues at Imperial College London, writing in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in late 2024, published a systematic review of PN aesthetic studies. Nine studies met their inclusion criteria, covering 219 subjects in total, and the review rated study quality as low to moderate. Several of the included studies found statistically significant improvement in wrinkles, texture, and elasticity, and texture change was reported most clearly within three months of treatment.

The same review flagged a real limit: injection sites and technique differed from study to study, so a standard “lasts X months” figure isn’t supported yet. I think that limit is worth stating plainly rather than smoothing over. Rejuran fits a multi-session course better than a single-visit, visible-result treatment, based on what this evidence shows.

Session spacing has its own data point. Rho NK and co-authors, in a 2024 survey of Korean dermatologists published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, found that three sessions at four-week intervals was the most common recommendation, with 79% of respondents choosing a four-week interval. A practice survey like this describes what dermatologists tend to do; it isn’t proof that the interval is optimal for every skin type.

A Skin Booster’s Duration Depends on What’s Inside

Because “skin booster” names a method, its duration evidence depends entirely on the product injected. SKINVIVE by JUVÉDERM is one example with approval-level data behind it. According to FDA approval documentation, it is a hyaluronic acid filler crosslinked with BDDE plus 0.3% lidocaine, and in a 209-subject clinical trial it improved cheek skin smoothness with the effect maintained for at least six months. The approval covers adults 21 and older, cheek area only.

That six-month figure belongs to this specific crosslinked formulation. It can’t be carried over to a differently formulated booster with a different crosslinking profile or concentration. When a patient asks how many months a water glow injection lasts, the real first question is which product, at what concentration, is going into the skin.

Our Gangnam branch’s menu includes Rejuran, SkinVive, Juvelook Volume, and other skin boosters. I serve as an Allergan faculty member for Juvéderm and Botox, and the product that fits a given patient’s skin is decided through an in-person skin assessment rather than a name picked in advance. Our earlier article on Rejuran versus HA skin boosters goes further into how the two differ at the ingredient and delivery level.

Where Does Exosome Stand in Korea?

Exosome is the name that most needs its regulatory status addressed before any duration question. According to a Dailypharm report, lawmakers raised the issue at a 2022 National Assembly audit that exosome products are registered as cosmetics rather than pharmaceuticals, and Oh Yoo-kyung, then commissioner of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, responded that they cannot, in effect, be used as an injectable. A 2025 MedicalTimes report described the Ministry’s position that delivering a cosmetic into the skin by needle exceeds its permitted use. The Korean Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Laser Medicine also reported a case in which a court upheld a three-month license suspension against a doctor who had injected a topical-use exosome cosmetic into a patient’s face.

Put together, if exosome enters a treatment plan in Korea at all, applying it topically is what stays within approved use.

On effectiveness, a 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal pooled 39 human studies, 26 on skin and 13 on hair, and calculated an average facial wrinkle improvement of 20.2%. The sources of exosomes varied widely across those studies, including human platelets, adipose tissue, rose stem cells, and milk, along with differing formulations, delivery methods, and treatment durations, and the review’s authors said this heterogeneity made it hard to draw firm conclusions about effectiveness. Shah and co-authors, in a separate 2025 review published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, reached a similar conclusion: early evidence looks positive, but a lack of standardization in manufacturing and application may limit current use.

Long-term follow-up data on duration is still missing. I don’t think a table ranking exosome against Rejuran or HA skin boosters by “months of effect” can be built honestly on what’s published so far.

Duration, Recovery, and Evidence Level Side by Side

Option What’s Confirmed About Duration What’s Known About Recovery Evidence Level
Crosslinked HA skin booster (e.g., SKINVIVE) Cheek skin smoothness improvement maintained at least 6 months in a 209-subject trial Manufacturer describes downtime as minimal FDA approval data
Skin booster, uncrosslinked HA and similar Varies widely by product and concentration; no single figure applies Injection marks and small bumps vary by individual Varies by product
Rejuran (PN) Texture improvement clearest within 3 months; no standard duration figure established Side effects generally reported as mild and temporary 9 studies, low-to-moderate quality
Exosome (topical use in Korea) Long-term follow-up lacking; duration undetermined Follows the recovery profile of whatever laser or device it’s paired with Heterogeneous studies, standardization lacking

The column that matters most here is the last one. “Lasts longer” only means something when the comparison sits inside the same evidence tier.

If Your Time in Seoul Is Short, Work the Schedule Backward

Patients visiting from abroad often stay somewhere between two and seven days, and that window changes which option makes sense.

  • A PN course isn’t finished in one visit. If three sessions at four-week intervals is the common pattern, this trip becomes session one, with the next session planned around a later visit to Korea.
  • If you want to see a result and fly home, check whether the product has single-session evidence behind it first. The crosslinked HA data above is one example of that kind of evidence.
  • If injection marks are a concern, scheduling the treatment earlier in the stay rather than the day before departure gives the marks time to settle, since how quickly they fade varies by person.

Our Gangnam Branch and Recovery Logistics

Our Gangnam branch sits inside the UH FLAT SIGNATURE GANGNAM hotel at 13 Teheran-ro 8-gil, WD Building, 2nd and 3rd floors, operating as an on-site facility rather than a separate building, and treatments take place in a private room. Guests staying at UHC group hotels can choose one complimentary recovery option: either a 30-minute oxygen chamber session or an IV vitamin drip. Using both means the IV drip is priced at 55,000 KRW. Full terms for this benefit are posted on our promotions page. Our Gangnam branch also has staff on site who can interpret in Japanese, Chinese, and English. For more on building a short-stay schedule around recovery, see 4-5 Days in Seoul for Treatments? Plan Recovery First.

What to Confirm Before Your Consultation

  • Whether you want an immediate hydration and glow result, or a texture and elasticity change that unfolds over weeks
  • Your arrival date, return flight date, and how many clinic visits fit in between
  • Any filler, laser, or lifting treatment from the past six months, and when it happened
  • What to ask in consultation: the exact product name and ingredient, including whether its HA is crosslinked, the delivery method, and the recommended session count and interval
  • If an exosome-containing step is mentioned anywhere in a treatment plan, whether that step is applied topically

FAQ

Can Rejuran and hyaluronic acid be mixed in one injection?

Yes, that combination exists. A case report published in Skin Research and Technology described 2cc of PN mixed with 2cc of uncrosslinked hyaluronic acid and lidocaine, injected every two weeks for three sessions. That report covered two patients treated for facial redness, so it’s too narrow a sample to generalize into evidence about glow results or duration more broadly. Whether to mix, and in what ratio, is decided after an in-person skin assessment.

Can this be combined with laser or lifting devices during the same stay?

Combining treatments in one visit is common in practice. In the Korean dermatologist survey cited above, 79% of PN users also used laser or light therapy, most often paired with radiofrequency or HIFU devices. On the other hand, the maker of SkinVive advises telling the treating clinician about any planned laser treatment or chemical peel around the same time, since the injected area can develop an inflammatory reaction. Same-day sequencing and order are worked out in consultation.

Are skin boosters used for neck wrinkles too?

In the United States, AbbVie announced on June 16, 2026 that SkinVive received an additional FDA approval for improving neck appearance. That approval applies within the US FDA’s clearance scope, so whether a neck treatment is appropriate here depends on an in-person exam of skin thickness and wrinkle pattern rather than the US approval alone.

Coming into a consultation with your schedule and the change you want already thought through, rather than a product name, tends to make the conversation far more specific and useful.
