Rejuran vs. Skin Boosters: Why Diagnosis Comes First

Hello, I am Dr. Kim Yeon-jin, Chief Physician at UHCELL Clinic Gangnam. Patients often ask us to simply pick between Rejuran and a skin booster before we’ve even looked at their skin. We don’t answer that question first. Rejuran and skin boosters are not competing versions of the same treatment — they act on different layers of skin and show their results on different timelines. Our consultation starts with your skin condition and your travel schedule, not with a treatment name, and the right choice usually falls out of that assessment rather than the other way around.

Two Treatments, Two Different Jobs in the Skin

Rejuran’s active ingredient is PDRN — polydeoxyribonucleotide, a DNA-derived compound most commonly sourced from salmon or trout. According to a narrative review on polynucleotides and PDRN published in the Journal of Cosmetic and Aesthetic Surgery, PDRN’s effects come from binding to adenosine A2A receptors and participating in the salvage pathway, a mechanism unique to this specific molecule at its natural molecular weight range. A separate narrative review on PDRN in aesthetic medicine, published in Cureus, describes how A2A receptor activation triggers a signaling cascade that increases cyclic AMP, activates protein kinase A, and shifts transcription factors associated with tissue repair and reduced inflammation. In practice, that means Rejuran works by prompting your own fibroblasts to rebuild collagen over time — it is a signal, not a filler, so the visible change builds gradually rather than appearing the moment the needle comes out.

Skin boosters, by contrast, are built around hyaluronic acid (HA), a molecule that binds many times its weight in water. A randomised controlled study on HA-based mesotherapy, published in Archives of Dermatological Research, injected non-cross-linked HA into one side of the face and saline into the other in 55 women, then measured skin elasticity and complexion radiance over three months. The HA-treated side showed a significant, sustained improvement in elasticity and a measurable increase in dermis thickness compared with the control side. Because HA holds water immediately on contact, the hydration and radiance from a skin booster are usually visible right after the injection, well before any collagen remodeling would show up.

Rejuran Skin Booster (HA-based)
Active ingredient PDRN (salmon/trout-derived) Hyaluronic acid
Primary mechanism A2A receptor activation → fibroblast stimulation, collagen synthesis Water-binding → immediate hydration, dermal volume support
When results appear Gradual, over weeks as collagen builds Immediate to short-term, visible right after injection
Best suited for Reduced elasticity, fine lines, skin that needs structural repair Surface dryness, dullness, an immediate hydration and glow need

The practical takeaway: Rejuran is closer to dermal repair, and a skin booster is closer to an immediate hydration correction. The same person can reasonably want either one, depending on whether the goal is “I need to look refreshed for a photo in three days” or “I want to see improvement over the coming weeks.”

Why We Look at Your Skin Before We Talk About Treatment Names

Both treatments are injected as fine deposits into the dermis, so injection depth and spacing have to be adjusted to your skin’s thickness, elasticity, hydration level, and recent treatment history. A skin that looks shiny on the surface but feels tight and dehydrated underneath — a compromised barrier — will only get a temporary hydration boost from a skin booster; the barrier itself may need attention first. On the other hand, repeating skin boosters on skin with pronounced laxity can restore glow while leaving the underlying sagging unaddressed.

We apply the same logic when patients ask us to compare lifting devices and peeling treatments, which we’ve written about separately in Lifting or Peeling? 5 Questions to Ask First. The mechanism differs, but the principle is identical: the treatment name is the last decision, not the first.

Five Questions We Ask Before Naming a Treatment

We walk through these in every consultation, in this order, before recommending Rejuran, a skin booster, or a combination of the two.

  1. What kind of skin concern is this? Surface dryness and deep dehydration have different causes than reduced elasticity or enlarged pores, and the cause determines which treatment takes priority.
  2. How much recovery time is left in your trip? If you’re visiting on a short itinerary, we need to know how many days remain before departure, because mild swelling or bruising needs time to settle.
  3. Do you have any allergies or relevant medical history? Any known sensitivity to salmon- or trout-derived products, pregnancy or breastfeeding status, and any active skin infection all need to be checked before either treatment.
  4. What treatments have you had recently? Recent laser sessions, fillers, or other lifting procedures affect timing and whether treatments can be safely combined.
  5. What’s the goal, and is this a one-time or ongoing plan? A single event like a shoot or a gathering calls for a different plan than an ongoing anti-aging routine with repeat sessions.

Naming the treatment before answering these five questions is how results end up feeling different from what was expected, or how a recovery timeline collides with a travel plan.

Recovery and Timing for Short-Stay Visits

Both treatments can leave mild redness or small injection marks that typically settle within a short period, though recovery speed varies by individual skin condition and injected volume. If you have an important event coming up, telling us about it during the consultation lets us adjust the treatment intensity and timing around it. Our Gangnam location sits inside the UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam building, so diagnosis, treatment, and the recovery period that follows can happen in the same space without having to travel between appointments. For patients visiting from abroad on a short schedule, our Gangnam location keeps Japanese-, Chinese-, and English-speaking interpreting staff on site, so the same language carries through from diagnosis to aftercare instructions.

FAQ

Can Rejuran and a skin booster be given on the same visit?

In some cases, yes, depending on your skin condition — but if the injection sites and depths overlap, swelling and bruising can be more pronounced. We decide whether to combine them, and in what order, only after the diagnosis, rather than treating it as a default option.

How soon will I see results?

A skin booster’s hydration and glow are usually visible right after the injection because HA binds water immediately. Rejuran works differently — fibroblast activity and collagen buildup take time, so expect a gradual improvement over several weeks rather than an instant change.

Can I get either treatment on a short trip?

Yes, but we need to match the treatment intensity to how much time you have left before departure. If your return date is close, we may reduce the intensity to limit visible swelling or bruising, or split the plan across this visit and a future one.

How do you decide which treatment to prioritize?

If reduced elasticity or fine lines are the dominant concern, we usually look at Rejuran first. If surface dryness and dullness are dominant and the goal is immediate radiance, a skin booster tends to come first. Most patients show a mix of both, which is exactly why the diagnosis happens before the treatment name.

If I come back for a follow-up, will you remember my treatment history?

Our Gangnam location is structured so the same physician who saw you at your first visit also plans your follow-up treatments. We’ve described how that continuity works in more detail in Why Your Next Visit Picks Up Where the Last One Left Off.

Rejuran and skin boosters differ in ingredient, mechanism, and timeline, which is exactly why we don’t start a consultation by naming one. What fits your skin depends on your current condition and the time you have available, and that’s what a diagnosis is for. Our Gangnam location is at WD Building, 2nd–3rd floor, 13 Tehran-ro 8-gil (inside the UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam building), with Japanese-, Chinese-, and English-speaking interpreting staff on site for consultation, treatment, and aftercare guidance.

Individual results and recovery time can vary based on skin condition and lifestyle factors. An accurate diagnosis and treatment plan require an in-person consultation.
