Skin Boosters for Glass Skin: HA, PN, or Exosomes?

2026/09/24

  • Skin Booster Treatment

Glass skin results depend less on which injectable you choose and more on identifying whether dullness comes from dehydration, textural aging, pigment, or enlarged pores first. Skin boosters split into three families, hyaluronic acid (HA) microinjections such as Skinvive, polynucleotide (PN) treatments such as Rejuran, and exosome formulas, each aimed at a different cause with a different level of supporting evidence. Patients with a short Seoul stay should work backward from their flight home to decide which family, and in what order, fits the time available.

Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Yeonjin, director at our Gangnam clinic. One question comes up in almost every consultation: “which skin booster works best?” My answer always starts with a different question, because “no glow” can mean four different things, and each one points to a different family of treatment.

I covered the ingredient differences themselves in an earlier post, Rejuran vs HA Skin Boosters: What Actually Differs?. This one covers the next step: how I match those ingredients to a patient’s skin and to the number of days they have in Seoul.

Four Reasons Skin Looks Dull

What people describe as “glass skin” comes from light reflecting evenly off the skin’s surface. When that reflection is broken, I check four things separately in consultation.

  • Hydration and surface smoothness: skin feels tight soon after cleansing, makeup lifts during the day, and the cheek surface feels rough to the touch.
  • Texture, fine lines, and elasticity: fine lines still show through even when hydration is adequate, and the skin feels thin and lacks bounce.
  • Tone, pigment, and redness: melasma, dark spots, or persistent redness scatter light unevenly across the face.
  • Pores and surface irregularity: enlarged pores or textural unevenness break up the surface even when tone and hydration are fine.

The first two are what skin boosters are built for. The second two usually call for a laser or energy-based device instead. Many patients have more than one of these at once, so I rank which cause is most visible right now before recommending anything.

Comparing the Three Skin Booster Families

Family Representative product Main target Evidence available What matters on a short stay
HA microinjection Skinvive Hydration, cheek surface smoothness FDA-approved product, randomized controlled trial data The maker describes recovery as minimal, though visible injection marks vary by patient
Polynucleotide (PN) Rejuran and similar Texture, fine lines, elasticity Positive results in a systematic review; individual study quality rated low to moderate Injection marks or temporary bumps can occur, so I build in recovery days before a flight home
Exosomes Exosome formulas Regeneration and texture, still under study Early-stage research; standardization and regulatory questions remain open I discuss it as an addition to another treatment rather than a first choice on its own

HA Microinjection: When Hydration and Smoothness Are the Goal

Skinvive is part of Allergan Aesthetics’ Juvederm line. According to a 2023 announcement from AbbVie and Allergan Aesthetics, the product received FDA approval for improving cheek smoothness in adults over 21. In the randomized, evaluator-blinded pivotal trial cited in that announcement, 58% of participants showed at least a one-point improvement on the cheek smoothness scale at one month, and 56% still showed that improvement at six months. Allergan Aesthetics later announced in June 2026 that a neck-improvement indication had also been approved.

That result comes from a specific area and a specific rating scale. It also means close to half the participants did not reach a one-point improvement, so I present the figure as an average with real individual variation, not a guarantee. I’ve served as an Allergan faculty member for Juvederm and Botox, which means I’m familiar with this product line and its injection technique. It does not change how any individual patient’s skin responds.

PN Treatments: When Texture and Fine Lines Are the Goal

PN products such as Rejuran are made from purified DNA fragments, commonly derived from salmon, and injected into the dermis. A systematic review by Lampridou and colleagues, published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology in 2025, analyzed nine studies covering 219 patients. Several of those studies reported statistically significant improvement in wrinkles, texture, and elasticity, with side effects generally described as mild and temporary.

The same review rated the included studies as low to moderate quality, and injection sites and technique varied across them. The authors concluded that consensus on optimal use is still lacking. In practice, this means I adjust the number of sessions and the interval between them based on skin thickness and how each patient responds, rather than following one fixed protocol.

Where Do Exosomes Fit?

More patients have started asking about exosomes specifically. A systematic review by Alzahrani and colleagues, published in Dermatology Practical & Conceptual in 2026, screened 1,032 records and analyzed 21 studies. Improvements in elasticity, wrinkles, and hydration were reported, but the reviewers noted a need for larger, longer, and more standardized trials. A separate review published in the journal Cosmetics in 2025 raised the same concerns, pointing to limited clinical evidence, regulatory barriers, and inconsistent standardization across products.

For a patient, this means the early signals are encouraging but formulation and quality can vary between products. When someone asks about exosomes, I walk through which formula is being discussed, how it would be applied, and whether another booster family could reach the same goal with a clearer evidence base.

Concerns Skin Boosters Don’t Treat

If dullness comes mainly from pigment or redness, boosters alone rarely get someone to the result they want. Pigment and vascular issues sit outside what boosters are designed to treat, so I look at toning lasers separately. If enlarged pores or surface irregularity are the main issue, radiofrequency microneedling devices such as Potenza become the first candidate instead.

Sagging that has changed facial contour is a similar case. There, I assess whether a lifting device such as Ulthera or Thermage should come before adding hydration, since boosters work at the skin’s surface layer while lifting devices reach deeper tissue. Whether to combine both in one visit or split them across visits depends directly on how many days a patient has in Seoul.

Sequencing by Length of Stay

International patients have a return flight already booked. I work backward from that time to suggest a family and order, then adjust once I’ve seen the skin in person.

Stay length What I consider first Why
2-3 days Consultation and treatment the day after arrival, starting with the option that carries the least recovery burden Injection marks have less time to settle before departure
4-7 days Treatment early in the stay, follow-up check later in the same trip Marks and swelling can be checked in Seoul before flying home
Recurring visits Different families addressed across separate visits Session-based treatments like PN can progress in stages without rushing

Same-day arrivals often show swelling and fatigue from travel that can distort a skin assessment, so I recommend scheduling the consultation for the day after landing when possible. I’ve written separately about what happens after you leave, in Recovering From a Skin Procedure in Seoul: What to Expect.

How a Consultation at Our Gangnam Clinic Works

Our Gangnam clinic sits inside UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam, on the second and third floors of the WD Building on Teheran-ro 8-gil. Because we operate as an on-site amenity of that same hotel, guests staying there can move between their room and our clinic without leaving the building. Treatment can be done in a private room.

Consultation starts with the four causes described above. From there I ask about the travel schedule and departure time, and we work out together which booster family, which other treatment, and which order fits that window. Japanese, Chinese, and English-speaking interpreting staff are on site, so patients can hear explanations of ingredients and recovery in their own language or in English.

There’s one practical detail that helps with recovery logistics. Guests staying at a UHC group hotel can choose one complimentary option, either a 30-minute oxygen chamber session or a vitamin IV drip. Using both means the IV drip carries a charge of 55,000 KRW. Full conditions are listed on our promotion page. There is no established evidence that this service improves skin booster results; I present it to patients as a way to manage how they feel during the stay, not as something that changes the treatment outcome.

What Changed in 2026 Cost Planning

One thing has changed for patients budgeting a trip. Korea’s Ministry of Economy and Finance’s July 2025 tax reform proposal ended the special value-added tax refund for foreign tourists’ cosmetic procedures, effective December 31, 2025, according to Newsis. The Narasallim Research Institute’s analysis found that the extension of this provision was left out of the tax law revision the National Assembly passed in December 2025.

Hankyung reported in July 2026 that a separate bill to extend the refund through the end of 2027 has been referred to a National Assembly subcommittee and is awaiting review. Since the outcome isn’t settled, I recommend confirming whether the refund applies at the time of booking, closer to your visit.

Check Before Your Consultation

  • Note which cause seems biggest to you: hydration, texture, pigment, or pores.
  • Share your return flight date and time before the consultation.
  • Bring a summary of any previous filler or booster treatments, including timing and any allergic reactions.
  • Decide in consultation whether a lifting device will be scheduled alongside boosters or on a separate visit.
  • Let us know if you’re staying at a UHC group hotel so we can plan recovery logistics together.

FAQ

Can I still get a skin booster if I’ve had filler before?

Yes, consultation is still possible, but the type, timing, and treatment area of any prior filler need to be confirmed first. Allergan Aesthetics’ 2026 safety information for Skinvive advises against use in patients with a history of severe allergies, lidocaine allergy, or previous allergic reactions to hyaluronic acid fillers. Please mention any of these during consultation.

Is there an age limit for skin boosters?

Approved use varies by product. Skinvive’s FDA approval, for example, applies to adults over 21. Rather than age alone, I choose a family based on skin condition and treatment goal.

Does combining several booster families produce better results?

There’s no established evidence that combining families produces proportionally better results. I select only the families a patient’s specific cause calls for, and on a short stay I limit the number of treatments so recovery demands don’t overlap.

When should I come back for my next session after returning home?

This depends on the family used and how the skin responded, so we typically decide the next visit together after checking progress from the first treatment. PN treatments in particular still lack literature consensus on optimal spacing, so intervals are adjusted to individual response.
