Tell Us Before Botox If Swallowing or Breathing Feels Different

Hello, I’m Dr. Yeonjin Kim, medical director of UHCELL Clinic Gangnam.

“I have a mild cold. Can I still get forehead Botox today?” We hear this on appointment days. A cough alone doesn’t lead to the same answer for everyone.

Please tell us if water makes you choke, breathing feels harder than usual, or your voice has changed. I check current swallowing and breathing before I look at the depth of a line. One short detail can change the order of care.

A mild cold and trouble swallowing are different information

Botulinum toxin is a prescription medicine that temporarily reduces signals from nerves to muscles. Even when it is used in the forehead, glabella, or crow’s-feet area, we review medical history and current symptoms before choosing injection points and treatment range.

We separate a runny nose from fever, food or water sticking, and shortness of breath at rest. Don’t label neck or chest discomfort as “just a cold” on your own.

People who already have swallowing or breathing problems may be more susceptible to clinically significant effects of botulinum toxin. There is no need to exaggerate a rare risk, but there is no benefit in hiding it.

Write down four details before your appointment

Small details are easy to forget in a consultation. A short note on your phone makes the review faster.

  • When the symptom started and when it feels strongest
  • Changes in swallowing, speaking, or breathing
  • Recent antibiotics, muscle relaxants, and regular medication
  • Neuromuscular conditions or a prior reaction after botulinum toxin

If you don’t know a medicine’s name, bring a photo of the prescription or package. Some antibiotics and muscle relaxants can affect neuromuscular transmission and need a clinician’s review.

Don’t stop a prescribed medicine on your own. I would rather see a complete medication list while you follow the prescriber’s directions than hear that you stopped a drug just for a cosmetic appointment.

We also check the skin at each planned injection site

Pus, drainage, or hot red skin at a planned injection site can suggest infection. Treatment at that site should wait. Please don’t cover the area before we see it under good light.

Feeling better after a cold doesn’t prove that swallowing has returned to normal. On the other hand, a slightly scratchy throat doesn’t automatically cancel an appointment. We weigh the symptom, injection site, and medication together.

I don’t recommend rushing ahead when the cause of a symptom is unclear. Cosmetic treatment is not emergency care. If another medical evaluation comes first, we reschedule the injection.

Which changes need prompt attention after treatment

A small bruise or tenderness can occur at an injection point. Slurred speech, difficulty drinking water, or trouble breathing does not belong in the same category.

Contact a medical provider immediately. Clear or rapidly worsening symptoms require emergency evaluation. Swallowing and breathing problems related to botulinum toxin have been reported from hours to weeks after an injection.

The appointment may be brief, but it is still a medical procedure. My standard is to check once more before treatment and clearly explain which warning signs require a call afterward.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does a runny nose automatically postpone treatment?

No. We review fever, overall condition, swallowing or breathing symptoms, and infection at the planned injection site before making a decision.

Should I stop an antibiotic before the appointment?

Don’t stop it on your own. Share the name and reason for the prescription so a clinician can review interactions and timing.

I had no problem last time. Is that enough?

A previous experience is useful history, but it cannot replace today’s assessment. Tell us about any new symptom and medication.

A botulinum toxin consultation is not only about the depth of a wrinkle. We also review your current health, medication, and the skin at every planned injection site.
