Gangnam Skin Clinic Pricing: What Actually Drives the Gap

The question I hear most often in consultations is some version of “another clinic quoted half this price, so why is yours different.” The short answer is that a listed procedure price is not a comparable number by itself. Two clinics can advertise the same treatment name and still be pricing entirely different things once you account for consumable authenticity, tax treatment, and what happens to you after the device is switched off. Two changes in particular reshaped this math heading into 2026, and I want to walk through them the way I would in a first consultation.

Why the Sticker Price Alone Doesn’t Compare Anything

Ultrasound and radiofrequency lifting devices such as Ulthera and Thermage rely on single-use tips that are replaced procedure by procedure. According to the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, modifying or reusing these lifting-device tips is illegal, and enforcement has followed: Korean courts have handed down fines and, in more recent cases, prison sentences to operators who reconditioned used tips and resold them to clinics. Device manufacturers have responded with their own countermeasures, including tips that carry a usage-tracking chip designed to stop recognizing the tip once its shot count is used up, plus programs where manufacturers collect and destroy spent tips directly rather than leaving them in circulation. The uncomfortable part, confirmed in multiple reports on the issue, is that a reconditioned tip is not visibly different from a genuine one once it is out of the box. Reporting on affected patients has described outcomes ranging from burns to results that underdelivered on volume, which is the opposite of what the procedure was bought for.

Shot-count marketing adds a second layer that a price list cannot show. A quoted “300 shots” means something different depending on whether all 300 are concentrated along the jawline or spread across the full face. The total number does not tell you the distribution, and distribution is what determines how much energy actually reaches each treated area. In my own consultations, I walk through where the shots will go and in what proportion before I talk about the total count, because the total by itself does not describe the plan.

The Tax Change That Reset the Math for 2026

From 2016 through the end of 2025, foreign patients undergoing cosmetic procedures in Korea could claim a refund on the 10 percent value-added tax charged at checkout. The Ministry of Economy and Finance confirmed this refund would not be extended past December 31, 2025, as part of its 2025 tax reform plan, and the National Assembly’s final revision of the relevant tax-restriction law omitted the clauses that would have kept it running. Reporting at the time noted the refund program had processed a meaningful share of foreign patients’ cosmetic spending in its final years, which is one reason its expiration drew industry pushback.

What this means practically is straightforward. Under the old system, a quoted price could look higher on paper but end up cheaper once the refund cleared after departure. From 2026 onward, there is no refund step to offset that, so the amount on the invoice is closer to the amount you actually pay. If you are comparing a Korea-based quote against your own market, the number you should be comparing is the final, tax-inclusive charge, not a headline price that assumed a refund that no longer exists.

Travel and Recovery Costs Change the Total, Too

When the comparison is Seoul versus your home market rather than one Seoul clinic versus another, the relevant figure is not the procedure fee in isolation. It is the procedure fee plus flights, lodging, and whatever it costs in time or money to recover afterward. On a short trip, where you rest after a procedure and whether you have to travel to get there both feed directly into that total.

• Does the quoted total already include VAT, or is it added separately at checkout?
• Is there a place to rest immediately after the procedure, and does using it cost extra?
• Can the consultation and the procedure itself be conducted in your own language?

Is the tip a clinic uses the main reason prices differ this much?

It is one major variable, not the only one. Genuine tips are built to stop working once their shot allowance is used, and reporting on illegal reconditioned tips has described exactly this: the recognition chip is bypassed so a spent tip can be resold as if new. That lowers the operator’s cost but, per the reporting cited above, introduces uneven energy delivery and a real risk of adverse outcomes.

Can foreign patients still get a VAT refund in 2026?

No. The refund available to foreign patients for cosmetic procedures ended December 31, 2025, following the Ministry of Economy and Finance’s 2025 tax reform plan and the National Assembly’s final legislation. Confirming whether a quoted price already includes VAT matters more now than it did before.

Does a higher shot count automatically mean a better result?

Not by itself. Shot count is a total, and the distribution across treatment areas matters more than the number alone. The same total delivered in a different pattern can produce a different result depending on your skin’s thickness and where laxity is concentrated.

Do I have to leave right after a procedure?

That depends on how the clinic is built.
