During consultations, we are asked some version of this question often: is there a dermatology clinic in Gangnam where I will not run into other patients? The short answer is yes, it is possible. But privacy behind the treatment room door is only half the job. What actually determines whether you cross paths with a stranger is the full route, from the moment you step into the building to the moment you finish recovering, and that route has to be designed on purpose.<\/p>\n<h2>Why more visitors are asking this question<\/h2>\n<p>According to 2024 figures from the Korea Health Industry Development Institute and Korea&#8217;s Ministry of Health and Welfare, more than 1.17 million foreign patients visited Korea for medical care, and dermatology accounted for 705,044 of those visits, or 56.6 percent of all foreign patient care that year. Seoul, and Gangnam specifically, drew the largest share of that traffic.<\/p>\n<p>As the volume of visitors grew, the questions we hear in consultation shifted too. A few years ago, the dominant concern was whether a procedure would work. Now we are just as likely to hear: will someone see me mid-treatment, or will I have to walk through a lobby or a public street while I am still visibly recovering. Patients working with a short window, often two to seven days in Seoul, tend to ask this first, before they ask about the device or the technique.<\/p>\n<h2>Why a private treatment room is not the whole answer<\/h2>\n<p>Some larger clinics run on a shared-bay layout: several treatment beds in one room, separated only by a curtain. In that setup, conversations and procedure sounds carry easily between beds, so even without seeing another patient&#8217;s face, you often know exactly who is there and what they came for.<\/p>\n<p>The clinical credentialing behind the door matters too. According to the Korean Dermatological Association, only about 2 percent of doctors in Korea hold board certification as a dermatology specialist, even though many clinics use &#8220;dermatology&#8221; in their name or signage. A shared-bay layout combined with a non-specialist consultation compounds the problem: you give up privacy and diagnostic depth at the same time.<\/p>\n<p>A clinic with individual treatment rooms solves part of this, but not all of it. A private room only closes the gap behind that specific door. Everything it takes to reach that door is a separate question.<\/p>\n<h2>The overlap risk sits outside the treatment room<\/h2>\n<p>In practice, patients tell us the overlap they worry about happens in three places: the building lobby, the waiting area, and the street immediately before or after treatment.<\/p>\n<p>Some clinics install access control so only patients with a booking can reach a given floor. That reduces overlap once you are inside the building, but it does nothing for the street before you arrive or the street you walk back onto right after treatment, when swelling or redness is often still visible. Proximity and a continuous route are not the same thing. A review published in the journal Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology found that psychological stress activates the sympathetic nervous system and the hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal axis, raising cortisol and catecholamine levels, which in turn can disrupt fibroblast activity and collagen synthesis during healing. In plain terms, staying tense while worrying about being seen by strangers immediately after a procedure is not a neutral condition for recovery, and a calmer setting may support the healing process better.<\/p>\n<p>That is why we treat the post-procedure route as part of the treatment plan rather than a courtesy.
