Not every dark dot is the same. An open comedone, a visible sebaceous filament, and a tender inflamed bump need different decisions.

Dr. Kim Yeon-jin first checks for pain, redness, crusting, and recent use of retinoids or exfoliating acids. The priority isn’t extracting everything in one visit. It’s deciding what is appropriate to treat today.

What happens during a Hydrafacial?

According to the manufacturer’s official description, Hydrafacial combines cleansing, exfoliation, suction-assisted extraction, and hydration in one continuous treatment. Tip selection, solutions, and optional steps vary with the program and skin concern.

This isn’t simply forceful manual extraction. The process addresses surface buildup and debris while delivering solutions. Even on a congested nose or chin, we first assess skin thickness, redness, and sensitivity to suction.

Not every dark dot is a blackhead

An open comedone contains sebum and keratin exposed at the pore opening, which makes it look dark. A sebaceous filament is part of the normal pathway that carries sebum. It can become visible again after extraction. Repeated squeezing in pursuit of a permanently empty pore can leave irritation behind.

A red, tender papule or a pus-filled lesion is different. I don’t treat an inflamed spot as if it were a noninflamed comedone. When acne requires diagnosis and ongoing treatment, I don’t present Hydrafacial as a stand-alone cure.

A short-term change is not the same as acne treatment

A small split-face randomized study of 23 women compared a 4% AHA solution with and without negative pressure. Comedone counts fell after one session on the negative-pressure side. The study used a specific solution and device setup, so its findings cannot be applied to every skin type or Hydrafacial program.

Another open-label study gave 20 adults six Hydrafacial acne treatments at two-week intervals. It had no control group and included an author employed by the manufacturer. These limitations matter. The study does not show that one treatment clears every blackhead.

Skin condition matters more than stronger suction

Tell your clinician if your skin is stinging or peeling, or if you use a retinoid, acid exfoliant, or acne medication. Active inflammation, broken skin, and possible infection also need assessment. I am cautious about applying the same tip and suction level to every nose.

Contact the treating clinic if heat, redness, or dryness lasts longer than expected, or if you develop pain, swelling, or drainage. When the barrier is already reactive, I may narrow the treatment area or discuss another plan first.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Will one Hydrafacial remove all my blackheads?

No clinician can promise that. Open comedones may look less visible, but sebaceous filaments can refill. Skin condition and daily care also affect the response.

Can inflamed acne be suctioned?

Red, painful, or pus-filled lesions should be separated from noninflamed comedones. An examination for inflammation or possible infection comes before aggressive suction or extraction.

Can sensitive skin have a Hydrafacial?

The label sensitive skin isn’t enough to decide. Current redness, stinging, peeling, broken skin, and use of retinoids, exfoliating acids, or acne medications should guide the area and intensity.

What should I disclose at the consultation?

Share recent skin procedures, allergies, active skin conditions, wounds or infection, and all oral or topical medications. A specialist should determine whether the treatment fits your current skin.

Hydrafacial is not a promise to erase every visible dark dot in one session. We first distinguish an open comedone from a sebaceous filament that can become visible again and from an inflamed lesion that needs medical assessment. Judgment comes before stronger suction.

At UHCELL Clinic Gangnam, we evaluate your unique skin condition to design customized calming, moisturizing, and barrier-support treatments.
