I’m Dr. Kim Yeon-jin, Chief Physician at UHCELL Clinic Gangnam.

Should you avoid washing when crusts appear? After fractional CO2 laser treatment, even washing your face can feel uncertain. Start with your skin’s condition and the cleansing instructions you were given, before choosing a cleanser.

When planning treatment, I consider scar depth, the area being treated, and the time available for recovery together. The same treatment name doesn’t mean everyone has the same surface reaction. Someone else’s next-day wash isn’t a schedule for your skin.

Crusts aren’t dirt to scrub away

Don’t pick them. Fractional CO2 laser creates tiny treatment spots while leaving skin between those spots untreated. Redness, dryness, stinging, and small crusts can follow. A rough surface isn’t necessarily ordinary dead skin.

I put an appropriate treatment area and recovery conditions ahead of adding stronger or more stimulation. At home, that also means resisting the urge to rub or scratch crusts off to get smooth skin sooner. Pulling them away can reopen the skin and increase the risk of infection and scarring.

Why does washing start at different times?

Check your instructions. Treatment depth, the area covered, oozing, and dressings all affect the cleansing plan. Before leaving, confirm whether the skin can get wet, what to clean it with, how often, and what to apply afterward.

Once washing is allowed, use the gentle method you were shown and avoid rubbing with a towel. Pause scrubs and cleansing brushes. Don’t improvise a vinegar mixture or disinfectant routine from the internet. If you’ve forgotten the instructions, contact the treating clinic.

A point I emphasize in consultation: a cheek treated for scars and an untreated forehead don’t necessarily need the same washing routine. Whether you may remove a dressing is a separate question.

Keep topical products simple for now

New products can wait. Familiar retinol, exfoliating ingredients, and brightening products can irritate healing skin. Moisturizers and ointments may have similar names but different uses. Follow the product and application instructions you received; don’t add an antibiotic ointment yourself.

Resume makeup after the surface has healed and your clinician has cleared it. Mild lingering redness is different from an open, oozing area. Crusts falling away aren’t a signal to restart every product at once.

Avoid sun exposure too. Use shade and a hat. Once the skin has healed and sunscreen is allowed, choose broad-spectrum UVA/UVB protection with SPF 30 or higher. Ask before putting it on an open wound.

Changes that need a call

Track what changes. Contact the treating clinic for increasing pain, redness or swelling, yellow or green drainage, new blisters, or fever. An article or photo alone cannot determine whether this is a temporary reaction, infection, or another problem.

Note when symptoms started, where they are, and which products you used. Don’t try to push through by washing more often or applying more ointment. Severe pain or feeling unwell overall calls for assessment that day.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Do crusts mean I must keep all water away?

Not necessarily. Cleansing may be needed according to your skin and dressing plan. Follow the start time and method given by the treating clinic.

Can I wear makeup as soon as the crusts fall off?

Crusts alone don’t decide that. Check whether the skin has healed and whether oozing or stinging remains. Restart after your clinician clears it.

Will a thick layer of recovery cream heal it faster?

More isn’t the goal. Use the instructed product as directed. Report burning or a rash, together with the product name, so your clinician can assess it.

How many days will recovery take?

There isn’t one schedule for everyone. Depth, treatment area, and skin response matter, and redness can remain after the surface heals. Discuss important plans during consultation.

At your fractional laser consultation, bring up your scar concerns and your washing, makeup, and outdoor plans.
