A laser is energy that responds to pigment. So I check those areas before I look at the spots.

Why do we ask about semi-permanent makeup?

A pigment laser targets pigment in the skin.

The problem is that the laser can’t tell the pigment in a dark spot from the pigment in semi-permanent makeup. When energy reaches that makeup pigment, the colour can fade — or the tone can shift instead.

There are three things I check.

Where the semi-permanent makeup is (brows, eyeliner, lips, hairline)

How long ago it was done, and whether it was touched up

Whether any swelling or scabbing remains there now

Only then can I separate the areas the laser will treat from the areas we leave alone.

Does semi-permanent makeup rule out laser treatment?

No, it doesn’t.

Having it is no reason to give up. It concerns a few spots, not the whole face. At the same time, assuming it will be fine and carrying on regardless isn’t right either.

I start by deciding where to treat and where to avoid.

Around the brows and eyeliner we either apply no energy or keep the area protected, and focus on the areas that need it, such as the cheeks and cheekbones. Raising the output across the board to finish in one go can affect the very areas we should avoid. Going stronger doesn’t make the result better.

I explain this boundary during the consultation.

If you’ve had semi-permanent makeup recently

Timing is part of the picture too.

Freshly done semi-permanent makeup sits on skin that is still healing. If there is scabbing or redness, it’s better not to add heat around it. It can also affect how the colour settles.

In that case I change the order. Waiting isn’t a loss.

We schedule the laser once the area has fully settled, or start with areas further away. Postponing everything isn’t the only answer.

And if you plan to have laser treatment first and semi-permanent makeup afterwards, tell us that too. The order changes how we plan recovery.

What to sort out before your consultation

To use a short consultation precisely, it helps to come with a few things organized.

Where your semi-permanent makeup is (brows, eyeliner, lips, hairline)

When it was last done or touched up

Whether there is swelling, scabbing or itching there now

Which area you most want the laser to address

I ask about the fourth one especially. Quite often the spot someone wants to clear sits right under the brow or beside the eyeliner. Then we choose a different method.

To be straightforward with you, a spot sitting very close to semi-permanent makeup is sometimes better left out of this round of laser treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

I have semi-permanent brows. Can I still have laser treatment on my face?

We decide after confirming where it is and when it was done. Often we apply no energy around the brows or keep them protected, and focus on the areas that need treatment. We confirm it together during the consultation.

Do I need to wait if the makeup was done recently?

If there is still scabbing or redness, it’s better to schedule once the area has settled. We check the healing and decide the timing together.

Can I have semi-permanent makeup after laser treatment?

Whether it’s suitable, and how long to wait, depends on the laser and your skin condition. If you have plans, let us know during the consultation.

Laser treatment isn’t a case of going stronger for a better result. Separating the areas to treat from the areas to leave alone comes first.

When you prepare for a consultation, please tell us about any semi-permanent makeup along with the spots you want to address. We’ll confirm your current skin condition and explain the range and order of care that’s needed.
