Hyaluronic acid boosters bring hydration that shows fast and fades earliest, PDRN and polynucleotide (PN) injections build a repair response that rises slowly over a full course, and collagen-stimulating injectables need extra weeks before new tissue forms. In consultation, I ask patients what change they want to keep before I answer how many months it will last.

Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Yeonjin, director of our Gangnam clinic. Patients staying in Seoul for two or three days, sometimes a full week, often ask me the same question: how long does a skin booster last? Before I answer, I usually ask one back. Is the result you want to keep a hydrated glow, a skin that recovers on its own, or volume and firmness that come from new structure? Those three outcomes persist in the body through different mechanisms, so the same “three months” can mean very different things depending on which one you mean.

Different Family, Different Definition of “Lasting”

Hyaluronic acid holds water in place until the body metabolizes it, so the effect lasts as long as the material itself remains. PDRN and PN are aimed at a different target: the repair response that happens in the dermis. The injected material triggers that response and then breaks down, and the change you see afterward comes from that ongoing repair process in the tissue. Collagen-stimulating injectables go a step further, where new tissue that forms over time is what carries the visible change.

That difference decides when a change becomes visible, what a clinician measures to judge it, and when the next session makes sense. The table below is close to the framework I actually use during consultation.

Family

What persists

When change becomes visible

What research has tracked

Session pattern

Hyaluronic acid boosters (hydration-type)

Hydration held by the injected material

Often within about two weeks

Follow-up at 15 days, 3 months, 6 months

Some studies used three sessions three weeks apart

PDRN

Dermal repair and anti-inflammatory environment

No standardized timing established

Mostly mechanism-focused reviews

Multiple sessions at intervals

PN (Rejuran-type)

Repair environment and skin texture

Assessed at 9 to 12 weeks, after a full course

9-week and 12-week endpoints; periorbital studies at 1, 3, 6 months

Three sessions three weeks apart in the cited study

Collagen boosters (PDLLA-type)

Newly formed collagen structure

From about one month onward

Collagen formation reported to continue for months

Sessions and spacing set after diagnosis

Exosomes

Evidence is still accumulating

Varies by study

Observation periods and designs are not standardized

Purpose and evidence reviewed together in consultation

Hyaluronic Acid Boosters: First In, First to Fade

The hydrated glow patients often call “mul-gwang” shows up fastest with hyaluronic acid boosters. Pino and colleagues, in a 2025 study in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology involving 81 patients, gave three dermal injections three weeks apart and evaluated results at 15 days, 3 months, and 6 months. Viscoelasticity and hydration markers showed an immediate change by day 15. The same paper notes that because non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid metabolizes naturally in the body, few studies have tracked skin booster effects past the one- to three-month window in the first place.

Results are not always as clean as expected. Ayatollahi and colleagues, in a 2020 Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology study, injected non-crosslinked hyaluronic acid three times at three-week intervals and measured outcomes at one week and four months. The hydration increase did not reach statistical significance, while skin elasticity showed a significant change. I tell patients this directly. The immediate hydration is usually easy to feel, but whether that particular change persists is a separate question that needs its own measurement.

If you have a fixed date, a shoot, or an event, this family is the easiest to time against a calendar.

PDRN and PN: Same Nucleotide Family, Different Molecules

PDRN, known to patients as salmon DNA injections, and PN, the active ingredient in Rejuran Healer, belong to the same nucleotide family but differ in molecular form. A 2026 review published in the journal Cosmetics describes PDRN acting through two mechanisms, adenosine A2A receptor activation and the nucleotide salvage pathway, which together stimulate fibroblast proliferation, extracellular matrix remodeling, collagen synthesis, and new blood vessel formation. A review in the Journal of Cutaneous and Aesthetic Surgery places the two side by side and explains that PN supplies the nucleic acid building blocks cells need for proliferation and repair, which is why its effect appears more slowly but tends to last longer and provide structural support.

Bae and colleagues, in a 2026 Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology split-face study, injected PN three times at three-week intervals and evaluated results at 9 and 12 weeks. The primary endpoint was the change rate in a fine-wrinkle index measured with 3D imaging equipment. The study design itself sets the evaluation point after the full course is complete, not after a single session.

If you feel no change after one session, that usually means you have not yet reached the point where the study measured a result. At the first consultation, I set the number of sessions, the interval between them, and when we will take comparison photos.

Under-Eye Treatment Runs on a Different Clock

PN products used around the eyes, such as Rejuran I, cannot be judged by the same timeline as the rest of the face. Under-eye skin is thinner, and the surrounding muscles move constantly throughout the day. A prospective observational study on periorbital rhytides in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology assessed patient-reported outcomes at 1, 3, and 6 months, and set the 6-month point as the state right before a maintenance session. That a study treats 6 months as a natural re-evaluation point reflects how this area is managed clinically.

In practice, individual variation is large. Sleep duration, eye-rubbing habits, contact lens wear, and sun exposure all affect this area. At the first diagnosis, I decide with each patient whether to treat only the under-eye area or design it together with the rest of the face.

Collagen Boosters and Exosomes: Two Separate Bets

PDLLA-type collagen boosters work toward a different goal. Lin and colleagues, in a 2023 Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology study, found that roughly two weeks after injection, most of the carrier fluid and secondary ingredients are absorbed, and around one month, collagen fibers begin forming around the remaining microparticles, continuing over several months. The fullness visible right after treatment is mostly the volume of the material and its carrier fluid. This family’s advantage shows up once a patient can wait past that one-month mark, and I consider it when volume loss or firmness is the primary concern.

Exosomes are a treatment I get asked about often and discuss carefully. A 2026 scoping review in Aesthetic Surgery Journal notes that most related clinical studies use small samples and single-arm designs, that randomized controlled trials remain rare, and that product standardization and regulatory frameworks differ by country, so efficacy claims should be treated as provisional rather than settled. The underlying biology is plausible, but the evidence base is still too early for me to promise a specific number of months.

Sequencing This Around a Short Stay

For patients visiting from abroad, sequencing often matters more than the duration number itself. A short trip of two to three days, or at most a week, has to fit consultation, treatment, and early recovery all at once.

Here is the order I go through in consultation:

I ask about your return flight date and what happens right after you land. Whether redness or injection marks are acceptable on those days changes which family makes sense.

I separate what we finish this visit from what carries over to a future one. Treatments like PN, which assume a multi-session course, sometimes mean patients receive only the first session before departure.

I confirm where you will recover. Our Gangnam clinic is inside the UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam building, so patients staying in the same building can go straight up to their room after treatment without stepping outside.

I confirm your consultation language. Our Gangnam clinic has Japanese, Chinese, and English interpreting staff on site, so questions that come up during recovery can also be handled through an interpreter.

I also walk patients through recovery support options in advance. Guests staying at a UHC hotel can choose one complimentary option, either a 30-minute oxygen chamber session or a vitamin IV drip; using both means the vitamin IV is billed at 55,000 KRW. The exact terms are listed on our promotion page.

What to Bring to Consultation

State in one sentence what change you actually want this time: hydration, texture and repair, or volume and firmness. Half of the family choice comes down to this.

Ask how many total sessions are planned, at what interval, and when results will be evaluated. A plan with no evaluation point gives you no way to judge how long the result actually lasted.

Tell us your return date and your schedule right after landing. How many days you can hide downtime for narrows down which treatment fits.

Mention any allergy history related to salmon-derived ingredients or other specific components before your consultation.

Let us know about any other ongoing treatments or medications you are taking.

If you want a closer look at how ingredients differ, our comparison of Rejuran and standard skin boosters covers that in more depth. But injecting several products into several areas on the same day makes it harder to tell which one caused a given reaction if one appears. I generally prefer narrowing the first visit to one track, confirming how you respond, and adding a second track on a later visit.

When should I start comparing before-and-after photos?

It depends on the family. Hydration-type treatments show change relatively early, but PN, which assumes a multi-session course, is evaluated in research at 9 to 12 weeks, after the full course is finished. Taking photos under the same lighting and angle each time makes the comparison far more useful at your follow-up consultation.

What should I do to make the effect last longer?

Sun exposure, sleep, alcohol, and smoking all affect the skin’s repair environment. Avoiding saunas, intense exercise, and alcohol for a few days after treatment is generally advisable. I can’t promise that lifestyle changes alone will extend a result by a set number of months, but keeping to the planned session interval and managing sun exposure are the two things I emphasize repeatedly in consultation.

Is it worth doing this if I can only get one session before flying home?

It depends on your goal. If hydration is the target, a single session can already be noticeable. If building a repair environment is the target, the first session is a starting point, and it helps to plan your next visit or a follow-up routine at home alongside it. That judgment is most accurate when I can see your skin directly.

※ Individual results and recovery times vary.
