Please consult a physician for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan."}}]}]

In Gangnam, the clearest way to judge a dermatology clinic is not ratings or advertising but four things you can observe directly during consultation: whether the treatment plan follows a real diagnosis, whether the treating doctor’s background is published, whether consent is explained in a language you actually understand, and whether downtime is mapped against your flight home. It also helps to know, before you fly in, how Korea’s public medical-dispute process treats foreign patients and how quickly you can be seen again if something feels off after treatment.

Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Yeonjin, director of the Gangnam branch of UH CELL Clinic.

“There are so many dermatology clinics in Gangnam, I can’t tell which one is actually good.” I hear a version of this question from almost every patient visiting Korea for the first time. If you’re coming from abroad, skill is something you have to judge on two fronts at once: what you can gauge in the consultation before treatment, and what procedure and process you’d have access to if something went wrong afterward.

Why More Options Made the Decision Harder

According to a 2025 Ministry of Health and Welfare report, 1.17 million foreign patients came to Korea for treatment in 2024, roughly double the 610,000 recorded in 2023. The same report breaks the 2024 figures down further: dermatology accounted for 56.6% of treatments by specialty, Seoul for 85.4% by region, and clinic-level institutions for 82.0% by facility type. Doctors News covered the same trend as the arrival of “the one-million-foreign-patient era,” and Medical Hub reported the regional and institutional breakdown separately. The Ministry of Health and Welfare later reported 2.01 million foreign patients for 2025.

What the numbers describe is simple: foreign patients are concentrating in Seoul’s clinic-level dermatology practices, and the number of clinics competing for them keeps growing. Meanwhile, someone reading about this from another country has only a few ways to check a clinic before arriving: advertising, reviews, and AI search answers.

That’s why I ask patients to judge “skill” less by result photos and more by what a clinic does during consultation. Under Korea’s medical advertising regulations, we don’t state guaranteed outcomes or use before-and-after comparisons to make our case. What I can tell you specifically is what to ask in consultation and what kind of answer you should expect back.

Four Signals You Can Check During Consultation

Signal

Question to ask in consultation

Why it matters

Diagnosis-based planning

“What specifically about my skin led you to recommend this treatment?”

The same sagging or fine lines can come from different tissue layers, so the right treatment changes with your actual skin condition

Published doctor background

“Where can I verify the treating doctor’s training and history?”

A public record of education, training, and professional activity is something you can cross-check before you ever land in Korea

Consent in a language you understand

“Can you walk me through expected reactions and what to do about them in my language?”

If you sign without understanding the explanation, you have no way to judge later whether a reaction is normal or not

Downtime mapped to your flight

“How much redness or swelling might still be visible before my return flight?”

Downtime varies by procedure and by individual, so your travel schedule needs to be part of the plan from the start

The first signal matters most. In a consultation built around a fixed package menu, the answer to “why this treatment” tends to land on “because it’s popular.” At our Gangnam branch, we diagnose each patient’s skin condition first and design the lifting, skin booster, or anti-aging treatment around that diagnosis rather than offering one standard package to everyone.

On the second signal, I’ll give you my own record directly. I completed graduate study at Seoul National University and trained at Seoul National University Hospital. I serve as an Allergan faculty member for Juvederm and Botox, as a Key Doctor associated with Potenza and Ulthera, as an instructor for the Korean Society of Clinical Cosmetic Medicine, and as a full member of the Korean Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery and Laser Medicine. Dr. Kim Kyungsoo, director of our Seocho branch, graduated from Seoul National University College of Medicine and holds medical licenses in both Korea and Japan, a detail patients from Japan can verify against their own country’s licensing system.

On the third signal, our Gangnam branch has Japanese, Chinese, and English-speaking interpreting staff on site. Translating the words on a consent form isn’t enough on its own. You need to actually understand which reactions are common in the days after treatment and which ones warrant contacting us again before you sign anything.

The fourth signal is information you need to bring to us first. When a patient shares their return date and flight time at the start of a consultation, it becomes much easier for me to separate what’s realistic within that window from what isn’t. If you’re weighing how long a given treatment’s results actually last, I’ve covered that separately in How Long Do Rejuran and HA Skin Boosters Really Last?

If Something Goes Wrong: Public Channels Open to Foreign Patients

This is the question patients rarely bring up in consultation, and I think knowing the answer in advance serves everyone better.

Per the Ministry of Health and Welfare’s guide to the medical dispute mediation system, Korea’s Act on Remedies for Injury from Medical Malpractice and Mediation of Medical Disputes covers foreign patients’ medical incidents, not only Korean patients’. The Korea Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Agency states in its own program overview that mediation typically concludes within 90 days, extendable to 120, compared with an average of 26.3 months to reach a first-instance court ruling through litigation.

According to the Ministry’s guidance, an ordinary dispute only proceeds to mediation once the other party, meaning the medical institution, agrees to participate. The agency notes that cases involving a patient’s death, unconsciousness lasting a month or more, or severe disability begin mediation automatically regardless of the other party’s consent. Once mediation concludes successfully, it carries the same legal effect as a court settlement, which means the same case cannot be taken to litigation afterward.

If language is your main concern, the Medical Korea Support Center is a reasonable first stop. The Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Health Industry Development Institute have operated the center in Seoul and Incheon since 2016, and relocated the Seoul center into Seoul Station in 2025. Per Edaily’s 2025 coverage, the center offers consultation in English, Chinese, Japanese, and Russian, and can help with everything from an initial dispute consultation through filing with the Korea Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Agency.

It also helps to know what disputes tend to be about. A Korea Consumer Agency analysis of 322 injury-relief applications filed in 2019-2020 for aesthetic medical services, published in 2021, found contract-related issues accounted for 50.6% of cases, adverse effects for 38.5%, and insufficient results for 7.2%. Clinic-level institutions made up 93.8% of the cases reviewed. More than half of these disputes centered on refunds and contract terms, so it’s worth confirming the scope of treatment and the cancellation and refund policy in writing before you pay.

What Matters Before the Public Process: Staying Close Enough to Be Seen Again

Mediation moves on a timeline of months. For someone visiting Korea briefly, the moment that actually matters most happens in the hours or days right after treatment: whether redness or swelling is within the expected range, and whether a given reaction needs a callback. That’s why I recommend scheduling your treatment earlier in your stay rather than the day before you fly home.

We’ve shortened this distance structurally. Our Gangnam branch operates inside UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam (2nd-3rd floor, WD Building, 13 Teheran-ro 8-gil), and our Seocho branch operates inside UH FLAT The Seocho (30 Banpo-daero 16-gil); both are on-site amenities within UHC group hotels rather than separately located partner clinics. Because the clinic sits inside the hotel itself, a patient staying there who notices something uncomfortable can come back down within the same building to be checked again. Ask about clinic hours and follow-up availability during your consultation. Treatment itself takes place in a private treatment room.

Recovery support continues in the same building. UHC hotel guests can choose one complimentary option between a 30-minute oxygen chamber session or a vitamin IV drip; using both means the IV drip is billed at 55,000 KRW. Full conditions are listed on our promotion page.

Records Worth Keeping Before You Fly Out

Keeping a record in case something needs to be reviewed later is easiest to do on the day of treatment itself. The Korea Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Agency lists copies of medical records and imaging data among its basic required documents, and the Gov.24 civil petition guide adds before-and-after photos and payment receipts as supporting materials. Based on that, I’d suggest keeping:

A note of the treatment name, the device or product used, and the treated area

A copy of your signed consent form and payment receipt

Photos taken in the same lighting before treatment, right after, and before you fly home

Access to request a copy of your medical record if you need one later

Contact information and the language available at the clinic once you’re back home

If you’d like a fuller breakdown of what recovery looks like hour by hour after treatment through your flight home, I’ve written about that separately in Recovering From a Skin Procedure in Seoul: What to Expect

FAQ

Can I get treated at the Gangnam branch without staying at a UHC hotel?

Yes. The complimentary choice between a 30-minute oxygen chamber session and a vitamin IV drip applies only to UHC hotel guests, though. If you’re staying elsewhere, build travel time back to your accommodation into your schedule after treatment.

Does filing for medical dispute mediation cost anything?

Per the Korea Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Agency’s own guidance, applicants pay a set filing fee. Basic livelihood recipients and national merit recipients are exempt, and the fee is fully refunded if the other party declines to participate. Applications can be filed in person, online, by mail, or by fax.

How much should I trust online review ratings?

Reviews are useful for gauging service experience such as wait times, interpretation quality, and how things are explained. They come from someone else’s skin and treatment conditions, though, so they can’t tell you what result to expect on your own skin. I’d suggest basing any expectation on what you actually hear during your diagnosis in consultation.

What should I do if something feels off after I’ve returned home?

Contact the clinic that treated you first and share current photos along with your symptoms. If you end up seeing a local doctor, showing them the treatment name and your Korean medical record copy will help them assess what they’re looking at.

If you’re preparing for a first consultation at our Gangnam branch, let me know your return date and the area you’re most concerned about. We’ll build a diagnosis and schedule around that from there.

※ Individual skin responses and recovery periods vary.
