Please consult a specialist for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan."}}]}]

A doctor near home can generally take over your follow-up care after a skin procedure in Korea — but that doctor has to judge skin they have never seen before, with no history of their own. What closes that gap is the paperwork you carry out of Korea: the record of what was done, where, how much, and with which device or product. Under Korea’s Medical Service Act, Article 21, you are entitled to request a copy of your own medical record, so ask before you fly home.

Hello, I am Dr. Kim Yeon-jin, Chief Physician at UHCELL Clinic Gangnam. Patients who travel to Korea for a procedure often ask the same question before they even leave the consultation room: “If something comes up after I’m home, will a clinic near me be able to help?” The short answer is that follow-up care itself is not off the table. But how far a local doctor is willing to take it over is that doctor’s own clinical judgment, and that judgment is built almost entirely on the records you hand them.

What a local doctor actually needs to pick up your care

Follow-up after a procedure falls into two kinds of visits: checking an expected course — swelling, redness, bruising — and, months later, planning a maintenance session or further treatment. Either way, a doctor who has never examined you before needs answers to a short list of questions:

Which procedure was it — what device, what injected product?

Which area was treated?

How much was used — shots fired, volume injected?

When was it done?

What medication was used before or after?

“I had a lifting treatment” or “I had a skin booster” does not answer any of these on its own. Two procedures sold under the same general name can use different devices, different products, and different depths or volumes, which changes what a normal recovery course should look like. Without a record, the receiving doctor starts by guessing what was actually done before they can assess how it’s healing.

If you had an injection, the product name matters most

Filler and skin booster treatments inject something into the skin, and “I had an injection” tells a local doctor nothing about what that something was. When a doctor needs to examine the treated area later, knowing the product name, the area, and the amount turns a vague exam into a specific one. If your procedure involved an injection, confirm before you leave that the product name is written into your record.

How to request your Korean medical record

Article 21(1) of Korea’s Medical Service Act gives patients the right to request to view or receive a copy of all or part of their own medical record, and a medical institution cannot refuse without a legitimate reason. Article 21(2) generally restricts the same record from being shown or copied to anyone other than the patient, which is why requesting it yourself, in person, before departure, is the most straightforward route.

Before you fly home, collect five things

The shorter your trip, the harder it is to gather everything on the last day. Ask for the following on the day of your procedure, or the day after:

A copy of the medical record — procedure name, treated area, and date

Device and product details — device name, injected product name, shot count or volume

Medication list — the method used for numbing during the procedure, and anything prescribed to take after you’re home

Aftercare instructions — what you were told about washing your face, makeup, and resuming exercise

Before-and-after photos — taken on your own phone under similar lighting, so a doctor at home has something to compare against

Keep these together as a single file before your local appointment. A doctor meeting you for the first time, in a short visit, will rely on this to understand your situation quickly.

Watching your early recovery in Korea before you leave

If your schedule allows some of your early recovery to happen while you’re still in Korea, that takes pressure off the handoff to a doctor back home. Our Gangnam clinic operates as an on-site facility inside the UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam hotel, so for guests staying there, the procedure and the first stretch of recovery happen within the same building. Guests staying at hotels in the UHC group can choose one complimentary option — either a 30-minute oxygen chamber session or an IV vitamin drip; using both means the IV drip is charged at 55,000 KRW. Full conditions are listed on our promotion page. We’ve laid out how that treatment-to-recovery flow works inside the hotel in Gangnam Lifting and Anti-Aging: See the Treatment-to-Recovery Flow.

Our Gangnam location has interpreting staff on hand for Japanese, Chinese, and English. If anything in your record isn’t clear to you, it’s worth asking about it before you leave rather than after.

Symptoms that need care right away

In the following situations, do not wait for an answer from Korea — find the nearest clinic or emergency department wherever you are:

Blurred vision or any change in eyesight after a filler procedure

Difficulty breathing, fading consciousness, or any sudden whole-body symptom

A severe, unexpected change at the treated site that you’re not comfortable waiting out

Even in an emergency visit, show the clinical team the records you prepared. Knowing what procedure was done helps them assess the situation faster.

FAQ

What if a local clinic says they can’t treat me because the procedure was done in another country?

Whether to take on your follow-up care is each clinic’s own decision, so I can’t answer for them in advance.
