It is tempting to expect a lifting treatment to hold that exact shape. A hand-pulled appearance is not a treatment outcome.

I consider what creates the fold first: a hollow beside the nose, downward movement of cheek tissue, or both. Similar-looking lines can involve different structures. Choosing a device comes later.

One fold can involve several changes

Nasolabial folds run from the sides of the nose toward the corners of the mouth. They are also part of normal facial anatomy and expression. Changes in skin elasticity and the volume or position of cheek tissue can make the boundary more noticeable.

Hollowing, lower-cheek sagging, and surface lines may coexist. A visible fold alone does not tell us that there is too much fat or too little firmness. We assess 2 conditions: a relaxed face and a smile.

Tightening is not volume replacement

Nonsurgical ultrasound and radiofrequency treatments use heat to encourage changes in tissue firmness. They do not add volume in the way an injectable filler does. If hollowing is the main concern, lifting should not be described as filling that space.

I place more importance on separating areas to treat from areas to avoid than on increasing intensity. Thin skin or limited cheek fat calls for a different assessment, not a standard plan. More energy or more shots cannot promise that a deep fold will flatten as hoped. Nonsurgical treatments also cannot guarantee the changes achieved by surgery.

A hand-lifted face is not a prediction test

Pushing a cheek upward moves the skin and underlying tissue together. A softer fold in that position is not proof that a particular device can reproduce it. Lighting and head angle also change the shadow beside the nose.

Bring 4 things to your consultation: unfiltered front and angled photographs, when the change began to concern you, recent weight changes, and the types and dates of previous procedures. Photos are supporting information, not a substitute for examination. Include the products and locations of previous filler or thread treatments if known.

A remaining line does not automatically need more treatment

Do not rush into additional lifting or filler simply because a fold remains. Reassess whether it reflects a natural facial boundary, a surface wrinkle, or reduced volume. I consider preserving facial balance more important than chasing the disappearance of a line.

Filler requires its own assessment. Alongside swelling and bruising, it carries rare but serious vascular risks; the product, injection site, and treatment history matter. Combining procedures is not the default. Moisturizer may temporarily soften the appearance of dryness-related fine lines, but it cannot replace assessment of deeper hollowing or sagging. Responses and treatment courses vary.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

Does a deep fold need stronger lifting?

Depth alone does not determine intensity. Assess hollowing, sagging, skin thickness, and fat distribution first. Stronger stimulation does not necessarily mean a better result.

If pulling my cheek softens the fold, will treatment do the same?

Moving skin and tissue by hand is not a test that predicts a nonsurgical outcome. A mirror or photograph alone cannot determine the device or result.

Should I add filler as well?

Combining treatments is not a starting assumption. The need for volume replacement and injection risks must be assessed separately. Share any previous filler or thread treatment records.

Look beyond the name of the fold to the factors creating it. At UHCELL Clinic Gangnam, consultations consider your current facial structure and treatment history, including what an approach can and cannot do.

※ Individual results and recovery periods may vary.
