Review counts and before-and-after photos do not guarantee the results or safety of your treatment. I recommend checking sponsorship disclosures, treatment details, posting dates, and recovery updates, then comparing that information with the explanation of your proposed treatment and instructions for what to do if a problem occurs.

Hello, I am Dr. Kim Yeon-jin, Chief Physician at UHCELL Clinic Gangnam.

If you are considering treatment during a visit to Korea, I recommend asking two questions as you read reviews: What can this account tell me, and what do I still need to ask? The number of satisfied reviewers is not the whole picture. Alongside satisfaction, check what guidance you would receive if you experienced a problem during your stay or after returning home.

Separate sponsorship disclosure from whether an account is genuine

First, look for a disclosure of benefits the writer received, such as a complimentary treatment, a discount, or payment for the post. Then read what experience the writer actually describes. Whether someone received a benefit and whether their account is truthful are separate questions.

In its official questions and answers explaining the revised 2023 Endorsement Guides, the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) says endorsements must be honest and not misleading. It also explains that unexpected connections that could affect how readers evaluate an endorsement should be clearly disclosed. Those connections can include money or other valuable benefits. I use this as a principle for reading a review’s commercial context, not as a test of compliance with Korean medical advertising law.

I would not dismiss everything in a review simply because sponsorship is disclosed. Equally, I would not assume a review is independent because no disclosure is visible. After checking the disclosure, read the treatment details and the account of recovery.

Similar wording or high ratings do not prove manipulation

The FTC’s October 2022 consumer guidance recommends reading reviews from multiple sources and checking posting dates and the reviewer’s other review history. It also explains that it can be difficult to distinguish genuine reviews from fake ones by appearance alone. Fake reviews are not necessarily positive or highly rated.

Repeated praise or a cluster of posts within a short period can be a reason to look at other sources. Neither is enough, by itself, to establish manipulation. A long, detailed review does not guarantee truthfulness either.

I recommend separating information you can check from the writer’s personal impressions. “The staff were kind” expresses an impression of service. “I had this treatment on this area” gives you a detail to compare with the treatment explanation.

Note the treatment, conditions, dates, and recovery details

As you read, organize the following information. This is a way to prepare consultation questions, not a scoring system for identifying genuine reviews.

What to look for in a review

Question to bring to a consultation

Treatment name and area

Rather than the general term “lifting,” what exact treatment was performed, and where?

Treatments received together

If several treatments were performed, what was the purpose of each?

Treatment date and posting date

Does the review describe an immediate impression or a later stage of recovery?

Recovery details

What discomfort does the writer describe, when did it occur, and how did it change?

If someone received several treatments together, do not attribute their satisfaction entirely to the effect of one treatment. If dates are missing, leave open the question of whether the account describes the immediate aftermath or a later outcome.

I also recommend treating before-and-after photos as prompts for questions, not promises that you will look the same. Ask which treatments were performed together and when the photos were taken. Similarly, a review describing discomfort does not, on its own, establish the cause or prove medical fault.

Compare the review’s treatment details with official information

Before choosing the treatment combination you saw in a review, I recommend checking the branch and treatment name against official information. Do not assume the same treatment configuration applies at a different branch or at a different time. If a product or device name is unclear, make a note to ask for its exact name and how it would be used.

Please read our Gangnam clinic’s lifting and skin booster information in the same way. Use our official medical team and treatment menu information to identify treatments you are interested in. Then distinguish a treatment’s appearance on the menu from its current booking availability and the plan appropriate for you. At our clinic, treatment plans are designed after an assessment of individual skin conditions. I encourage you to explain your own concerns before focusing on the combination described in someone else’s review.

If you want to check authenticity, ask what documentation or method can be used to verify the actual device or product intended for your treatment. A device name in a review is not enough to settle that question. A higher price or the word “premium” should not substitute for a discussion of safety. When reviewing prices, ask exactly what treatment scope and items are included.

Reviews cannot replace an explanation of your own treatment

Whether a reviewer was satisfied is separate from whether you understand your proposed treatment. I recommend bringing these questions to your consultation:

Why is this treatment being considered for the change I want, and what range of improvement can reasonably be expected?

What are its limitations, side effects, and recovery considerations?

What else needs to be considered because of my skin condition or previous treatments?

Does the plan need to change because of the length of my stay or my return date?

What is included in the quoted cost, and under what circumstances could additional charges arise?

If you do not understand wording in an explanation or consent form, ask before signing. If you cannot comfortably understand the explanation in Korean, ask in advance how you can review the information in a language you understand. Alongside the changes you hope to see, ask what to do if an unwanted reaction occurs.

If you are visiting Korea, ask what happens if a problem occurs

I recommend going beyond the statement “aftercare is available.” Ask separately about communication, medical assessment, and costs. The questions below are suggestions to help you prepare before a visit. They are not statements of our clinic’s individual services or promises of compensation.

Separate contact arrangements from access to medical care

Ask which contact method to use if you experience discomfort, when that contact channel is available, and how to arrange an appointment. Separately ask under what conditions you could receive prompt medical assessment and what instructions apply outside clinic hours. Being able to contact a clinic does not automatically mean immediate medical care is guaranteed.

Ask about inquiries and records after returning home

Ask whom to contact if a problem develops after you return home, and what to do if medical assessment is needed. Also ask how to request relevant treatment records, including the treatment name, date, and products used, and in what form those records can be provided.

Distinguish additional care costs from dispute and compensation terms

Ask separately about responsibility for additional medical costs, how to raise a concern, and any compensation-related guidance. Receiving an explanation of a response procedure is not the same as receiving a promise that costs will be reimbursed. If compensation terms are provided, check the written eligibility conditions, exclusions, and required documents.

The Korea Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Agency provides medical dispute consultation information and guidance on applying for mediation and arbitration through its official English website. I recommend that visitors from overseas also be aware of this public consultation resource. Its existence does not establish entitlement to compensation in an individual case or constitute a clinic’s promise to compensate you.

Before searching for more reviews, note the treatment names, posting dates, and any explanations you do not understand in the reviews you have already found. Add the changes you want and your return date, then compare those notes with our clinic’s official information and the explanation provided during your consultation. I recommend deciding after you understand the conditions that apply to you and what to do if a problem occurs, rather than relying on the number of positive or negative reviews.

※ Skin reactions and recovery times vary from person to person. Please consult a medical professional for an accurate diagnosis and treatment plan.

Read skin clinic reviews as personal experiences, not guarantees.
