Do You Need to Fly Back to Korea for Touch-Ups?

- Skin Care
Whether you need to fly back to Korea on a set schedule to maintain a treatment depends on what you had done. Botox, which has a relatively well-documented effective period, is usually renewed once a few months have passed and movement starts to return. Hyaluronic acid fillers and energy-based lifting work differently: the right time for your next session depends on how your skin looks at the next assessment, not a fixed calendar. Whichever path you take, organizing your treatment record before you leave Korea lets you decide for yourself whether to return here or continue care with a doctor near home.
Hello, I am Dr. Kim Yeon-jin, Chief Physician at UHCELL Clinic Gangnam.
If you are visiting from abroad, you may be wondering, “How often do I actually need to come back to Korea to keep this result?” For patients on a short trip, I think this question matters as much as which treatment to choose. Today I want to walk through how I think about return timing by treatment type, and what to prepare before you fly home so your care can continue smoothly.
What Decides Whether You Need to Come Back
The phrase “maintenance treatment” actually covers very different kinds of procedures. I find it useful to separate them into two groups: those with a relatively well-documented effective period, and those where reassessment matters more than a fixed interval.
Botox: A Relatively Short, Well-Documented Effective Period
The American Academy of Dermatology notes that the effect of botulinum toxin injections for wrinkles usually lasts about three to four months, and sometimes longer. The same guidance explains that a repeat treatment can be considered once the wrinkles return.
In other words, Botox is not a “come back automatically every three months” treatment. It is a treatment where you and your doctor decide to repeat once the effect starts to fade. If you want to maintain the result over a year, you should expect a few touch-up points to come up, and it helps to plan ahead for the schedule and cost. Whether you return to Korea for each one or continue with a doctor near home is something you can decide based on your own timeline.
Hyaluronic Acid Fillers: Reassessment, Not a Calendar Date
For hyaluronic acid fillers, I don’t recommend the same fixed interval to every patient either. I think it makes more sense to check your skin and remaining volume at your next visit and decide from there, rather than adding more simply because a set number of months has passed.
That’s why I recommend setting a next assessment date rather than a routine return schedule. If you still have filler in place, that information matters to whichever doctor treats you next.
Ulthera, Thermage, and Other Energy-Based Lifting: No Fixed Round-Trip Cycle
The same reasoning applies to energy-based lifting treatments such as Ulthera and Thermage. We design each treatment after an individual skin assessment rather than running a standard package, so the timing of your next session also follows that assessment rather than a preset calendar.
A Quick Reference by Treatment Type
| Treatment type | What decides whether you return | Basis |
|---|---|---|
| Botox | When the effect fades and wrinkles start to reappear | American Academy of Dermatology guidance: usually 3–4 months, repeat once wrinkles return |
| Hyaluronic acid filler | Your current condition and remaining filler at the next assessment | Individualized assessment |
| Energy-based lifting | Your skin condition at the next assessment | Individualized assessment |
What to Prepare Before You Leave Korea If You Plan to Continue Care at Home
You don’t have to come back to Korea at all — continuing care with a doctor near home is a valid option. What makes the biggest difference in that case is your record.
The International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery advises patients planning treatment abroad to check in advance who will see them and where follow-up care is available if a complication arises after returning home, and to make sure their treatment information can be passed on to a doctor at home. That guidance is written with surgical patients in mind, but I think the same reasoning applies to non-surgical treatments.
Before you leave, I would recommend confirming:
- The name of the treatment and the device or product used
- The treatment area and date
- Any dose or shot count your next doctor would need to plan around
- Aftercare instructions and the name of any prescribed medication
Ask at your consultation how you can receive this record. Having it on hand means you won’t need to start from scratch when discussing your next treatment with a doctor at home.
Your Recovery Time While You’re in Korea
If you’re on a short trip, where you spend your time right after treatment matters too. Our Gangnam location is on the 2nd and 3rd floors inside the UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam hotel building, so if you’re staying at that hotel, the distance between your room and the treatment space is short. We also have Japanese-, Chinese-, and English-speaking staff on site at the Gangnam location.
Guests staying at the UHC hotel can choose one complimentary option: a 30-minute oxygen chamber session or a vitamin IV drip. If you’d like both, the vitamin IV is 55,000 KRW. You can check the full terms in our promotion details.
FAQ
What should I do if I have a reaction after returning home from treatment in Korea?
I would recommend seeing a doctor near you first rather than waiting to fly back. Bringing the treatment record described above will help whoever examines you understand quickly what you received.
When should I decide on my next visit?
I recommend discussing your next assessment date at the same consultation where you’re treated. For Botox, that’s roughly when the effect starts to fade; for fillers and lifting, it’s when you’d want your skin reassessed. At that point, you can decide whether a return trip to Korea or continuing care at home makes more sense.
I’ve written in more detail about planning treatment and recovery time together in Lifting and Anti-Aging in Gangnam: Planning Procedure and Recovery Together. If you’re weighing your next visit, I would suggest bringing your current skin condition and your past treatment record to the consultation so we can decide together.
