Understanding the Shurink Lifting Process
I’m Dr Kim Yeon-jin, Medical director of UH CELL Clinic Gangnam.
I’m here to accompany you on your journey toward feeling your best.
If your jawline looks less defined when you look in the mirror, or your lower face feels heavier that it used to, you may have found yourself thinking, ” Maybe it’s time to consider a lifting treatment.
But once you start looking into lifting treatments, the sheer number of options can make the decision feel overwhelming.
There are radiofrequency treatment, ultrasound-based treatment, contouring devices, and many other options to choose from.

Today, I’d like to talk about Gangnam Shurink in particular.
When speaking with patients, I often hear questions like:
“My friend and I had the same treatment, but it seemed to work for my friend and not for me.
Why is that?”
Many patients have the same question because even when they receive the same treatment with the same device, one person may notice a visible difference while another may not.
The difference is not simply a matter of the number of shots. With Gangnam Shurink, one of the most important factors is the treatment planning and design process.
Is Gangnam Shurink Universe getting more shots really better?
Shurink Universe is a lifting device that uses High-Intensity Focused Ultrasound (HIFU) to deliver thermal energy to different layers of the skin.
It works by concentrating energy at specific depths while minimizing damage to the skin’s surface.
As a results, it is often considered by those concerned about loss of skin firmness, facial contouring, or as an option for those trying a lifting treatment for the first time.
However, the key point is not simply “How many shots were used?” but rather “Which layers were targeted, and how was the energy delivered?“

In practice, when performing Gangnam Shurink, patients who appear to have similar concerns about facial sagging may actually have very different underlying causes.
For some, excess fat in the lower cheeks may contribute to a heavier-looking lower face. For others, thinner skin and lower facial volume may mean that overly deep stimulation feels like unnecessary stress on the tissue.
In other words, the same treatment approach cannot be expected to produce the same changes for everyone, because each individual’s skin condition, fat distribution, and facial structure can be different.
What Matters More Than Shot Count Is Energy Planning

Lifting is not simply a matter of delivering energy to the skin with the device.
For a more balanced approach, factors such as facial fat distribution, skin thickness, the direction of sagging, and the prominence with the cheekbones all need to be taken into consideration.
For example, when concerns include a double chin and sagging along the jawline, it may be important to focus energy distribution on the lower face.
On the other hand, for individuals with thin skin and limited volume in the mid-cheek area, it may be more appropriate to focus on the dermal layer rather than repeatedly applying excessive stimulation to deeper layers.
For facial structures with more prominent cheekbones, it is also important to consider whether the use of high energy at a specific depth could place unnecessary stress on the tissue.

This is why, with Gangnam Shurink, the treatment planning process is so important:
✅ Which tip use
✅ Where to target the energy
✅ How to adjust the energy intensity
Ultimately, the key is not “more”, but “more precisely.”
Why results can differ
When patients say they felt the results of Gangnam Shurink were somewhat underwhelming, there are often a few common factors involved.
- Insufficient energy may be delivered to areas that need more attention, while unnecessary energy is repeatedly applied to areas that may not require it.
- The treatment may be performed using the same pattern without taking individual differences in skin condition or fat distribution into account.
These are just some of the reasons why treatment outcomes can vary.
Ultrasound-based lifting can produce different responses depending on an individual’s facial structure.
Therefore, rather than focusing solely on the number of shots or energy intensity,
it is important to consider the current condition of the skin and the overall balance of the face when designing the treatment approach.
Why I Wanted to Talk About Gangnam Shurink Today?

As lifting treatments have become increasingly familiar, the names of devices themselves are sometimes treated almost like trends.
In particular, Shurink is often simply described as a relatively gentle treatment or a good option for those new to lifting,
while there is often less discussion about which skin types and facial structures it may be suitable for, and in which cases the results may be more limited.

There are certainly differences like these in clinical practice.
Shurink has its own advantages, and it delivers focused ultrasound energy to deeper layers of the skin, making it suitable for approaches aimed at improving skin firmness and overall facial contours.
However, it is important to recognize that certain facial structures may be better suited to the treatment than others.
One of the questions I hear frequently from patients is:
“Am I actually someone who needs a lifting treatment?”
I believe this is an important question in itself.
It reflects the process of first understanding what changes are beginning to occur in your face, rather than simply deciding to undergo a treatment.
In reality, the way your face looks in the mirror is influenced by much more than a single area of skin.
Factors such as skin firmness, facial volume, skin thickness, and the overall distribution of weight across the face can all contribute to your appearance.
If you are considering a lifting treatment, I recommend first taking a moment to carefully assess your current skin condition and the environment you are in before deciding on a treatment.
