How Does Clinic Aftercare Continue After You Leave Seoul?

Aftercare after a lifting or booster procedure falls into four stages: the day of treatment, the rest of your stay in Seoul, the weeks after you fly home, and your next visit. Patients staying only two to seven days spend most of the recovery window in their own country, so the details worth settling before departure are where you will rest, which records you will carry home, and when your next visit should fall based on how long your specific procedure tends to last. Whether a sauna or hot spring is safe again depends on how much swelling and redness remain rather than the number of days that has passed.

Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Yeonjin, director of the Gangnam branch of UH CELL Clinic. I’m writing this for patients who worry about what happens after a procedure, especially those who spend only two to seven days in Seoul and complete most of their recovery back home.

The American Society of Plastic Surgeons notes in its briefing on cosmetic surgery tourism that packages combining travel with cosmetic procedures can leave patients with limited or no follow-up care once they return home. That paper is written with surgery in mind. Non-surgical procedures still take weeks or months to show their full result, so I think the same principle applies: plan the connection to your home-country care before you leave.

The Four Stages of Aftercare at a Glance

This is the framework I use in consultation to walk patients through aftercare. Each stage has a different focus, a different person responsible, and different preparation.

Stage Main focus Who is responsible What to prepare
Day of procedure Immediate redness, swelling, pain, precautions The treating physician Where and how you will rest
Rest of your Seoul stay How swelling and bruising progress; anything unexpected The clinic that treated you A pre-departure check-in
After you fly home How results unfold; handling any adverse reaction Your home-country provider and the treating clinic Records and before/after photos
Next visit Timing your next procedure based on how long results last The treating clinic Prior records, your next travel date

Day of Procedure: Recovery Starts Inside the Hotel

Our Gangnam branch sits on the second and third floors of the UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam building. Because the clinic operates as an on-site amenity of the same UHC hotel group, guests staying at that hotel can go straight up to their room after treatment instead of leaving the building. Procedures themselves take place in private treatment rooms.

UHC hotel guests have one more choice for that recovery time: a complimentary 30-minute oxygen chamber session or a vitamin IV drip. Using both is possible, at an added charge of 55,000 KRW for the IV drip. I do not present this as something that improves your procedure results; I present it as a comfortable way to spend the first few hours afterward. The full terms are posted on our promotions page.

While You’re Still in Seoul: Put a Check-In on the Calendar Before You Fly

Different procedure types reveal their results at different speeds. According to MU Health Care, Botox can take three to ten days to reach its full effect, and filler can leave mild bruising and swelling that lasts anywhere from a few days to a few weeks.

When a stay is short, that window often falls after you have already left. That’s why I recommend scheduling a brief check-in the day before departure, or on the morning you leave. Three things are worth confirming at that visit:

  1. Whether your current swelling and bruising fall within the expected range
  2. What changes are normal after you get home, and what changes mean you should reach out
  3. Which channel and which language you will use to reach us if you need to

Our Gangnam branch has interpreting staff who work in Japanese, Chinese, and English. Settling how you will reach us during this same check-in visit removes the guesswork later, when you are already back home and unsure whether something is worth a message.

When Is It Safe to Return to a Sauna or Hot Spring?

This comes up often for patients from Japan, where hot spring bathing is part of daily life, and for guests from Taiwan and Korea who use saunas regularly. Heat widens blood vessels, which can make swelling and bruising last longer, so I advise against strong heat right after a procedure. Exactly how long to wait depends on the procedure, the treated area, and how your body responds.

Rather than give you a fixed number of days, I use a visual check. Hold off on saunas, hot springs, jjimjilbang, and hot baths until swelling, redness, and warmth in the treated area have settled. For injection-based procedures like fillers or skin boosters, wait until the injection marks have healed. If a hot spring trip is already on your itinerary, mention it during consultation. Sometimes adjusting the procedure choice or the treatment date works better than adjusting your travel plans. For more on the recovery window itself, see our guide on recovering from a skin procedure in Seoul.

Records Worth Carrying Home

Good aftercare after you leave depends on whether your home-country provider knows exactly what you had done. The CDC’s 2026 Yellow Book travel medicine guidance advises medical tourists to request an English-language copy of their treatment records abroad and hand it to whichever provider treats them afterward. The same guidance notes that the American College of Surgeons has recommended obtaining a complete medical record before returning home. The most reliable time to request that copy is before you leave Seoul.

Here is what I suggest patients take with them:

Record Why your home provider needs it
Procedure and device names (e.g., Ulthera, Thermage) Depth and mechanism differ by device
Treatment area and shot count or energy setting Matters when timing an overlapping procedure later
Injected product name and volume (filler, Botox, skin boosters) Response to an adverse reaction depends on the product family
Prescribed medication and duration Helps avoid duplicate prescriptions at home
Before and after photos A baseline for comparing results or reactions
Payment receipt Ties cost to the specific procedure performed

Having these records does not guarantee a home-country provider will take over your follow-up. Whether a clinic is willing to monitor a procedure performed elsewhere varies, so I recommend checking with your regular dermatologist before you travel.

Records also matter in the rare case of a dispute. South Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare confirms that its law on medical accident relief and dispute mediation applies to foreign patients as well as Korean nationals. According to a 2012 report by the Korean outlet Etoday, the Korea Medical Dispute Mediation and Arbitration Agency began offering interpretation in 18 languages for foreign patients that year. Government24’s guidance on filing a mediation request lists treatment records, before and after photos, and payment receipts among the required documents, which overlaps with most of the table above.

How Long Do Results Last, and When Should You Come Back?

Timing a return visit works backward from how long a given procedure holds its result. The ranges below come from published guidance in the U.S. and vary by individual.

Procedure When results appear What’s known about duration How to judge your next visit
Botox 3-10 days (MU Health Care) Typically fades after 3-4 months (MU Health Care) When facial muscle movement starts returning
Filler Shape visible right after injection; bruising and swelling last days to weeks (MU Health Care) Typically 12-18 months (ASPS) Varies widely by product and area
Ulthera Builds over 2-3 months (West County Plastic Surgeons of WashU Medicine) Depends on your natural aging pace (same source) Compare before and after photos
Thermage, skin boosters Not covered by the sources in this article Depends on skin condition and product Judged from progress photos in consultation

If you’re visiting from abroad, it helps to plan your next trip against this table. A patient who received both Botox and Ulthera is looking at two separate return windows for those two procedures. Which procedure to prioritize on any single visit is something we work out together, based on your prior records and how your skin looks that day.

Check Before Your Consultation

  • How far your procedure fee covers follow-up, and what triggers an added cost
  • If you’re staying at a UHC hotel, which recovery option you’ll choose: the oxygen chamber or the vitamin IV drip
  • When to schedule your pre-departure check-in
  • Which channel and language you’ll use to reach us after you’re home
  • Which records to request before you leave (see table above)
  • The recommended timing of your next visit for each procedure you received

FAQ

Can I fly home the day after my procedure?

The ASPS medical tourism briefing suggests waiting seven to ten days after facial surgery or laser treatment before flying. That guidance is written around surgical procedures, so it doesn’t translate directly to a non-surgical lifting treatment or an injection. How much buffer you need before flying depends on the specific procedure, so let us know your flight dates and we’ll plan the procedure schedule around them.

Can I get a different, additional procedure once I’m home?

You can, but spacing matters when a different procedure overlaps the same treated area. I’d suggest showing your home provider our treatment record, confirming the procedure name, area, and settings, and deciding from there.

Do I need to buy special skincare after the procedure?

Not necessarily. Right after a procedure, stick to the gentle moisturizer and sunscreen you already use, and hold off on exfoliants or retinoids until redness has settled. That’s also a good time to postpone introducing anything new, since it’s easier to tell what’s causing a reaction if you’re not changing several things at once.

What languages does interpretation cover?

Our Gangnam branch has interpreting staff who work in Japanese, Chinese, and English, so consultations, procedure explanations, and pre-departure check-ins can all be handled in those languages.

If you have questions about aftercare coverage or the UHC hotel guest benefit, our promotions page has the current terms, and we’ll map out your specific aftercare schedule during consultation.
