How Should You Order Lifting Treatments in Seoul?

2026/09/22

  • Lifting Treatment

For a 3- to 5-day stay in Seoul, the order you book lifting and anti-aging treatments in should follow three things: the recovery window reported in the literature, how much a single visit can finish, and where you can spend the hours right after treatment. Ranked by fit for a short trip rather than by strength of result, monopolar radiofrequency clears fastest, focused ultrasound needs a wider buffer before your flight home, and injection or volume-based treatments fit better into a longer or repeat visit.

Hello, I’m Dr. Kim Yeonjin, director of UH CELL Clinic’s Gangnam branch. In consultation I regularly hear a version of “I only have three nights, what should I actually book?” Answering that question by naming a device first usually sends the plan sideways. The same focused ultrasound treatment means something very different the night before a flight home than it does the morning after arrival. So when a patient’s dates are fixed, I start from how much time recovery needs and place the treatment on top of that, not the other way around.

The Three Criteria Behind This Order

The ranking below is not about which treatment produces the strongest result. It is about fit for a short, fixed stay. I use three criteria:

  1. Reported recovery course. How long redness, swelling, and bruising took to resolve in the published literature. Individual variation is always present.
  2. How much finishes in one visit. Whether the plan is complete after a single session or built around repeat visits spaced weeks apart. The shorter the stay, the more this criterion matters.
  3. Whether you have somewhere fixed to recover. If you are moving between sightseeing stops with a flushed or swollen face, managing the recovery course yourself becomes harder.

If the ranking criterion were duration of effect or degree of improvement instead, the order would change. That depends on your skin condition, not your travel dates, so I evaluate it separately in consultation.

I’ve also mapped downtime order across a broader set of short-trip treatments in an overview of procedures for a short Seoul trip. This article stays focused on lifting and anti-aging choices specifically, along with the hotel recovery setup and credential questions patients ask next once they’ve settled on that category.

1. Monopolar Radiofrequency (Thermage, Oligio): Fastest Return to Your Schedule

Monopolar radiofrequency devices, including Thermage and Oligio, heat a broad volume of the dermis and the layer beneath it to trigger collagen contraction and remodeling. A 2022 review on radiofrequency facial rejuvenation, published in the International Journal of Dermatology and Venereology, listed low complication rates and short downtime as advantages of radiofrequency treatment, while also noting that many of the studies it reviewed relied on subjective evaluation methods, which calls for caution in interpreting the results.

A 2024 study published in the journal Cosmetics treated 20 women with a single session of monopolar radiofrequency, then had three dermatologists who were not involved in the treatment evaluate the results in a blinded design at 4, 12, and 24 weeks. The same paper listed redness, headache, and swelling as uncommon adverse events, so mild side effects are possible even with this shorter-downtime option.

In practice, the warmth and mild flushing right after treatment tend to settle within a few hours, and some patients book a morning session and keep their afternoon plans. For patients with lower pain tolerance, I recalculate the full appointment length to include numbing cream application time.

2. Focused Ultrasound (Ulthera): A Deeper Target With a Wider Swelling Buffer

Ulthera uses ultrasound imaging to confirm depth while creating micro-thermal coagulation points at several layers. A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis published in the Aesthetic Surgery Journal listed redness, swelling, edema, bruising, and tenderness as common adverse events following MFU-V treatment, generally mild to moderate, and the authors themselves flagged a limitation: neutral responses may have been classified as positive, which could have inflated the reported effectiveness. I share that same limitation with patients directly in consultation.

I set the upper bound of the recovery window from a separate source. A 2025 multidisciplinary consensus paper on managing MFU-V complications, published through the U.S. National Institutes of Health’s PubMed Central, reported that adverse events were generally mild and temporary, with redness resolving in about 48 hours, swelling in about 8 days, and bruising in about 20 days. I schedule around that upper bound. Planning a 3- to 4-day trip as if bruising has zero chance of appearing makes the departure day difficult.

A 2019 observational study published in Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology followed 22 women with moderate or greater jawline and submental laxity after a single session, tracking them for 24 weeks. In that study, skin elasticity measurements dropped significantly at 4 weeks before rising significantly again at 12 and 24 weeks, with no adverse events recorded over the follow-up period. When a patient feels no visible change in the first few weeks and expected more, I walk through this exact course with them.

3. Radiofrequency Microneedling (Potenza)

Potenza delivers radiofrequency energy locally through fine needles inserted into the skin. Because it limits damage to the epidermis while still delivering thermal stimulation to the dermis, it is often used alongside concerns like enlarged pores and skin texture. Some patients see small red puncture points and swelling for one to three days.

Since the timing of makeup coverage is tied directly to travel plans, I generally avoid scheduling this the day before a flight home. Placing it the morning after arrival instead lets me check the recovery course directly during the rest of the stay.

4. Polynucleotide Injections (Rejuran Healer)

Rejuran Healer injects polynucleotides derived from salmon into the dermis. The direction and limits of the evidence both need to be seen together. A 2025 systematic review on polynucleotides in aesthetic medicine, published in the Journal of Cosmetic Dermatology, included only nine studies with varying designs, sample sizes, and outcome measures, and noted that none of the included studies scored perfectly on critical appraisal, concluding that results should be interpreted cautiously.

A 2026 systematic review of randomized controlled trials, published through PubMed Central, searched literature through January 2026 and included seven trials with 183 total participants. It reported improvement in wrinkle-related measures and patient satisfaction with no serious treatment-related adverse events, while also stating clearly that the sample size was small and the protocols were heterogeneous.

The reason injectable treatments rank lower for a short stay is less about recovery time and more about session count. Injection marks and minor swelling usually settle within a few days, but the treatment is often designed around repeat sessions spaced weeks apart. For patients trying to complete a plan in a single short visit, I raise this point first.

5. Collagen-Stimulating and Volume Treatments (Juvelook and Fillers)

Collagen stimulators such as Juvelook, along with volume work using fillers, produce results that settle in gradually. Because the appearance right after treatment differs from the final result, scheduling this immediately before a flight home leaves both the patient and me without enough to judge the outcome by.

Volume-focused treatments benefit the most from follow-up observation and adjustment if needed. When a stay is short, it is often safer to use this visit to set the direction with an energy-based treatment and leave volume planning for a later visit.

Downtime Comparison at a Glance

Treatment group Primary target layer Reported recovery course Fit for a short stay Suggested placement
Monopolar radiofrequency (Thermage, Oligio) Deep dermis and below, broad volume Warmth and flushing settle relatively fast; redness and swelling reported as uncommon High Any day of the stay, morning preferred
Focused ultrasound (Ulthera) Deep layer including SMAS Redness about 48 hours, swelling about 8 days, bruising up to about 20 days Moderate Morning after arrival, at least 3 days before departure
Radiofrequency microneedling (Potenza) Dermis, along needle path Small red points and swelling for 1-3 days Moderate Avoid the day before departure
Polynucleotide injections (Rejuran Healer) Dermis Injection marks and swelling for a few days; repeat sessions typically assumed Low to moderate Plan alongside a return visit
Collagen stimulators and volume work (Juvelook, fillers) Dermis to subcutaneous Same-day appearance differs from final result; follow-up observation needed Low Schedule with room to spare in the itinerary

The recovery ranges in this table reflect what the cited literature reported. Actual recovery depends on treatment intensity, treated area, and individual skin response.

Where You Spend the First Few Hours After Treatment

Our Gangnam branch is on the 2nd floor of the UH FLAT SIGNATURE Gangnam building. The guest rooms are upstairs in the same building, so after treatment you can go up to a room and rest without stepping outside. The clinic space sits inside a hotel building operated by the same group, and treatments themselves are done in a private room.

I would rather state the recovery-care arrangement precisely than let it sound bigger than it is. UHC hotel guests can choose one of two options at no charge: a 30-minute oxygen chamber session or a vitamin IV drip. If you use both in the same stay, the vitamin IV drip costs 55,000 KRW as of our most recent review in September 2026. The full terms are listed in our official promotion page.

Having a fixed place to recover nearby means that if swelling or redness lingers longer than expected, you can come back down and show me directly. I’ve covered post-return maintenance separately in an article on treating pigmentation and pore concerns on a short Seoul trip.

Checking Who Treats You and What Language They Speak

I completed graduate study at Seoul National University and trained at Seoul National University Hospital. I serve on Allergan’s faculty for Juvederm and Botox, and I am registered as an Ulthera Z Key Doctor and a Potenza Key Doctor. When you book, it is reasonable to ask who will actually perform the treatment and whether that person is the same one who consulted with you. That is a question worth asking anywhere you consult, not only here.

Our Gangnam branch has interpreter staff on site for Japanese, Chinese, and English. If you need interpretation, letting us know your language at the booking stage lets us plan the schedule around it.

What Changed in VAT Refunds for 2026

Starting in 2026, the cost calculation looks different than it used to. Article 107-3 of Korea’s Restriction of Special Taxation Act, as published on the National Law Information Center, limited the VAT refund for foreign tourists’ cosmetic medical services to services received on or before December 31, 2025. According to a December 2025 report by the Korean news outlet iNews24, an extension of that provision was left out of the National Assembly’s plenary session, and the program ended that same month, closing out the 10 percent post-payment refund that had been in place since it was introduced in 2016.

The same report cited data submitted to the National Assembly by Korea’s Ministry of Health and Welfare and the Korea Health Industry Development Institute, showing the number of foreign patients visiting dermatology and plastic surgery clinics grew from 82,374 in 2022 to 846,990 in 2023.

For patients, this changes two practical things. First, bundling several higher-cost treatments together now carries a bigger cost impact without the refund. Second, you need to calculate more than the treatment fee itself. Real spending only becomes clear once you add transportation, lodging, and any plans you have to cancel during recovery. In consultation, I more often recommend choosing what this particular visit actually needs and pushing the rest to a later trip, rather than adding treatments to one visit.

Check Before You Book

  • Share your return flight date and time first, so the treatment date can be set by working backward from it.
  • Treatments with a chance of bruising are scheduled away from the day before departure.
  • Confirm the full appointment length, including numbing cream time, at the booking stage.
  • Injection treatments that need repeat sessions should be decided together with a plan for a return visit.
  • Tell us in advance which language you’ll need for interpretation.

FAQ

Is it safe to include Ulthera in a 3- to 4-day trip?

It can work, but placement matters. A 2025 multidisciplinary consensus paper published through PubMed Central reported that redness tends to resolve in about 48 hours, swelling in about 8 days, and bruising in about 20 days after MFU-V treatment. I generally recommend treating the morning after arrival and using the remaining stay to check the recovery course. If you have an important event right after returning home, we adjust this visit toward a shorter-downtime treatment instead.

Can I get a lifting treatment and a skin booster on the same day?

Depending on skin condition and treatment intensity, same-day combinations are sometimes appropriate, and sometimes better spread apart. Combining two treatments can bring on swelling and redness together, making it harder to tell the two recovery courses apart. In consultation, I decide this by looking at your length of stay and departure date together. I’ve also covered fitting multiple concerns into one visit in an article on treating pigmentation and pore concerns during a short Seoul trip.

When do results actually start showing?

Energy-based lifting treatments take time because they work by remodeling collagen. In the 2019 observational study published in Clinical, Cosmetic and Investigational Dermatology, elasticity measurements after a single focused ultrasound session actually dropped at 4 weeks before rising again at 12 and 24 weeks. Seeing the final result during the trip itself is unlikely. Most patients notice the change over the weeks after returning home.

Is a single injection session worth doing?

The literature reports improvement, but the evidence base is still limited in size. A 2026 systematic review published through PubMed Central included 7 randomized controlled trials with 183 participants total and stated clearly that the sample size was small and the protocols were inconsistent. The amount of change from one session varies a lot between individuals, so if you’re planning to stop after a single visit, I set expectations with that in mind before we begin.

I’m worried about pain. How is it managed?

Each treatment group feels different. Radiofrequency is mostly a warming sensation, while focused ultrasound delivers a brief, sharper pulse to deeper layers. The 2025 meta-analysis mentioned above also reported pain at a moderate level. We can adjust numbing cream time, energy settings, and how the treatment area is divided, so telling me your pain tolerance honestly in consultation lets me build that into the plan.

Can I go sightseeing right after treatment?

It depends on the treatment. Warmth-based radiofrequency lets some patients continue their day as planned, while microneedling or injection treatments can leave redness visible for one to three days. Sauna, alcohol, and strenuous exercise are best avoided in the early recovery period. Our Gangnam branch sits on the 2nd floor of the hotel building, so you can rest in a room after treatment and decide the rest of your plans once you see how you feel.

※ Skin response and recovery time vary by individual. Please consult a physician directly for an exact diagnosis and treatment plan.
